Clay Matthews has a strong background in law, with experience as an Associate Attorney at multiple law firms. Clay started their legal career at Jefferson Davis Community College, where they served as an Associate Professor. Clay then went on to work at Miller & Martin PLLC, Squire Patton Boggs, and Connolly Bove Lodge & Hutz LLP, before eventually becoming the Chief IP Counsel at NewMarket Corporation.

Clay Matthews has a diverse education history. Clay first attended The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 1987 to 1990, where they earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry. Following this, they pursued further education at The University of Alabama from 1990 to 1995, obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Chemistry. Finally, Matthews attended UNH Franklin Pierce School of Law from 1997 to 2000, earning a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in Law.
