About @sohoplace

Nica Burns has built a new flexible theatre located at the top of Charing Cross Road, the recently launched @sohoplace. This new theatre is a fantastic addition to the Soho district and to London as a whole.

@sohoplace theatre has a close operational relationship with Nimax Theatres, which Nica co-owns with Max Weitzenhoffer. Nimax Theatres owns and operates six theatres in the heart of London’s West End – the Apollo, Duchess, Garrick, Lyric, Palace and Vaudeville- with a combined capacity of 5,000 seats. In addition to hosting some of the UK’s most critically acclaimed and successful plays and musicals, Nimax presents a busy and varied programme of comedy, concerts and children’s theatre.

This role is based @sohoplace theatre. As part of the operational agreement between @sohoplace theatre and Nimax Theatres, the contractual employer will be Nimax Theatres.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Deputise for the Head of Electrics when required.

  • Assist the Head of Electrics with the effective and efficient running of the Electrics department, including compliance with statutory obligations, health and safety management, building maintenance and delivery of the technical requirements of the visiting production.

  • Ensuring that the building electrical installation is maintained to a safe standard.

  • Ensure the safety of staff, contractors, visiting company and patrons in relation to the building electrical installation and production lighting.

  • Ensure all Electrics staff and contractors are operating within the Company’s safe systems of work and procedures.

Health and Safety / Fire Safety

  • Assist the Head of Electrics with the implementation and operation of the Company’s Health and Safety Policy at the theatre.
  • Assist the Head of Electrics with the implementation and operation of the Company’s Emergency Procedures at the theatre and carry out any specific duties required in the event of an emergency.
  • In conjunction with the Head of Electrics, maintain the fire alarm system including carrying out regular tests in line with procedure. Investigate faulty detectors and rectify.
  • Liaise with the fire service in the event of a full building evacuation.
  • Assist the Head of Electrics in ensuring the Permit to Work systems as described in the Company’s management plans are adhered to.
  • Train/induct new staff members in accordance with the Company’s procedures.
  • Deputise for the Head of Electrics in overseeing get ins, get outs, fit ups etc. and undertake safety tours such as to ensure that safe working practices are in place and all parties involved are working in line with Nimax’s Health and Safety Policy and Management Arrangements, relevant house or site rules, method statements and risk assessments.
  • When required, attend, and contribute to both local and group wide Health and Safety meetings.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of statutory compliance and required inspections and certifications, and book in contractors as required to ensure the building remains compliant.
  • Action any findings from inspections to ensure the building remains compliant with current Health and Safety standards and recommendations.
  • Update certificates and records on the Company’s Health and Safety portal.

Building Duties

  • When instructed by the Head of Electrics, carry out improvement works on the electrical installation throughout the building.
  • Carry out regular inspections of the roof and clear any debris from drains and gutters as required.
  • Provide building access to relevant contractors and oversee their visit to ensure they are adhering to approved safe practices whilst on site.
  • In conjunction with the retained contractor, maintain and adjust the boiler and chiller units to ensure that the ambient temperature in the building is maintained at a comfortable level.
  • Oversee the lamp replacement rounds on all internal and external areas as required.
  • Oversee the testing of portable electrical appliances using the appropriate equipment. Keep records of such testing for inspection if required.
  • Carry out basic plumbing tasks as required. Contact the retained plumbing contractor if further assistance is necessary.
  • Maintain the building’s drainage system.
  • Isolate water supply if flooding occurs and report to Theatre Manager, Head of Electrics and Head of Buildings in accordance with procedure.
  • Investigate any interruptions to power supply and report to provider, Theatre Manager, Head of Electrics and Head of Buildings in accordance with procedure.
  • Where necessary take responsibility for opening up and locking up of the building.

Production Duties

  • Ensure that power supplies for the production lighting installation have been correctly and safety connected and used.
  • Ensure the production lighting is operating correctly in accordance with the Lighting Designer’s design.
  • Install and re-focus production lights as necessary in accordance with the Lighting Designer’s design.
  • Run cables around the building as required.
  • Oversee the cleaning of the lighting rig as required.
  • Programme the lighting desk for new productions.
  • Operate the lighting desk for performances as required.
  • Cover the duties of Show Crew Electrics where necessary, including operating follow spot lights, operating the lighting desk and completing Stage LX cues.
  • During get ins/outs of productions, fulfil manual tasks such as transporting equipment, set and lights around the building as required.

Staff Management

  • Assist the Head of Electrics with ensuring staff are adequately trained, supervised and competent; to provide strong line management, leadership and pastoral care.

  • Deputise for the Head of Electrics in the rostering of the Electrics Department staff (including show staff):

    • Working in line with relevant contracts, agreements and budgets;
      • Ensuring that the requirements of the visiting company / production and the theatre (for general maintenance and management purposes) are suitably met;
      • Publishing and circulating rotas to the wider company and the visiting company;
      • Managing holiday and organising deputies for Show Crew Electrics and cover for the full time staff as required;
      • Managing and administering payroll in line with company policy.
  • Assist the Head of Electrics with the recruitment of permanent and performance staff within the Electrics Department as required, and managing the new starter process.

  • To actively promote and champion positive cross-departmental working, particularly with the Stage Department and Theatre Management team.

Administrative Duties

  • Using the Company’s purchasing system, raise purchase orders with suppliers for lamp stock and other equipment required by the department.

  • Respond to queries and liaise with visiting production companies, contractors and colleagues via email and telephone.

General

  • Attend relevant training as requested by the Company.
  • Carry out any other duties as may be reasonably requested by the Theatre Manager, the Head of Electrics or the Company.

Person specification

Essential

  • Experience of working within an Electrics department.
  • Experience of operating and programming lighting desks.
  • Understanding of health and safety.
  • IT competence; experience of using Office 365, Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • A quick learner who is keen to develop and share their knowledge.
  • A flexible approach, with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • A proactive and calm approach to problem solving.
  • A positive outlook and ability to communicate effectively with their team and the Production.

Desirable

  • Electrical Training (BS7909, CG4141-01, CG2391-52 or equivalent)
  • Experience of person / team management.
  • Experience of the theatre industry.
  • First Aid at Work qualification.
  • Working at Height trained.
  • IOSH qualification.
