Vanessa (Hunt) Totten has an extensive work experience in the legal field. Vanessa began their career in 2002 as an Attorney at LexisNexis, where they worked until 2005. In 2005, they joined the NC Department of Justice as an Assistant Attorney General and held this position until 2018. During this time, they were promoted to the role of Special Deputy Attorney General in 2018. Currently, they serve as the Section Head and Special Deputy Attorney General at the NC Department of Justice.

Vanessa (Hunt) Totten completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics with a minor in African American Studies at the University of North Carolina, where they attended from 1994 to 1998.
