Tommy Gavigan

Tommy Gavigan, MD, MSc, currently serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine since January 2024. Gavigan has been a Bariatric and General Surgeon at Novant Health since August 2021 and completed a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Atrium Health from August 2020 to July 2021. Previous experience includes a Surgical Fellowship focused on Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at Hackensack Meridian Health from August 2019 to July 2020 and a residency at Carolinas Healthcare System from July 2014 to July 2019. Gavigan’s educational background includes a Doctor of Medicine degree from the UNC School of Medicine (2010-2014), a Master’s degree in Anatomy and Neurobiology from Virginia Commonwealth University (2008-2009), and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1998-2002). Early career experiences include leadership roles at Moondance Adventures and research positions at Virginia Commonwealth University and UNC Hospitals.
