Carel Smit

Carel Smit is an accomplished professional in the fields of intellectual property (IP) and biosciences, currently serving as Director of IP and IP Strategy Advisor at Formo since June 2020. As the Founder of Biophile, a consultancy specializing in biosciences and medtech, Carel Smit provides IP advisory and commercialization strategies. In addition, Carel holds roles as a Limited Partner at Nucleus Capital and a Non-Executive Director at Biotome Pty Ltd. Carel Smit is also a Guest Lecturer at The University of Western Australia and has a significant history with various companies, including Co-Founder of Photizo Light Therapy and former Senior Intellectual Property Advisor at Rio Tinto. Academic qualifications include an MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise from the University of Cambridge, a Master's in Intellectual Property from the University of Technology Sydney, and multiple degrees in Genetics and Law from the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa.
