Marilena Mela, MSc, PhD, ABMGG Active Candidate has a diverse and extensive work experience in various roles and organizations. Marilena is currently working as an Assistant Clinical Lab Director for Molecular Diagnostics at the New York Genome Center. Prior to this, they served as a Junior Member of the Board of Directors and a Junior/Trainee member of the Cancer Genomics Consortium Communications Committee at the CANCER GENOMICS CONSORTIUM.

Marilena has also worked as an ABMGG Clinical Laboratory Genetics and Genomics (LGG) Fellow at Nationwide Children's Hospital under the Steve and Cindy Rasmussen Institute for Genomic Medicine.

Before that, they were a PhD Candidate in Cancer Biology and Genomics at Keck Medicine of USC and held a position as a Research Lab Specialist at USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Hospital, where they focused on projects related to Human Genetics.

Their earlier experience includes working as a Project Coordinator at the Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology ''Andreas Syggros'', and as a Cytogenetics Technician (Practical Training) at "Mitera" General Maternity and Children's Hospital/Cytogenetics Diagnostic Lab.

Marilena holds an MSc in Human Genetics from the Department of Biosciences, University College London (UCL), and an MSc in Molecular Basis of Human Disease from the University of Crete, Department of Medicine. Marilena completed their undergraduate degree, a BSc in Applied Biology/Biotechnology, at the University of Ioannina.

Marilena began their academic journey in 2002 at the University of Ioannina in Greece, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Biology/Biotechnology, completing their studies in 2007.

Continuing their education, Marilena then attended the University of Crete in Greece from 2008 to 2010, obtaining a Master of Science degree in Molecular Basis of Human Diseases/Molecular Medicine. This program provided their with a deeper understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying human diseases.

In 2010, Marilena expanded their knowledge further by attending UCL, where they earned another Master of Science degree, this time in Human Genetics. This program likely provided their with a more specialized focus on genetics and its application to the study of human traits and diseases.

Marilena's pursuit of higher education did not end there. From 2015 to 2019, they attended the University of Southern California in the United States, where they completed their Doctor of Philosophy degree. The focus of their Ph.D. studies was Cancer Biology and Genomics, indicating their interest in the genetic basis of cancer development and progression.

Aside from their formal education, Marilena has also obtained certifications to enhance their expertise. In 2014, they attained a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Microsatellite Instability (MSI) reading. Additionally, in 2020, they acquired a certification titled "Paving the Path Towards a Clinical Grade HGVS nomenclature" from ACMG, the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics.
