Michael Pickup, FCPA, FCA, has a distinguished career in public service, serving as the Auditor General of British Columbia from July 2020 until November 2024 and as the Auditor General of Nova Scotia from July 2014 to July 2020. Prior to these roles, Michael served as Principal at the Office of the Auditor General of Canada from January 1990 to June 2014. Michael's educational background includes a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Acadia University and various executive leadership programs from institutions such as Stanford University, Western University, and the Conference Board of Canada. Additionally, Michael has received specialized training in mental health first aid from the Canadian Mental Health Commission and holds a CPA designation from CPA Nova Scotia.

Located in downtown Victoria, B.C., the Office of the Auditor General employs approximately 120 people. The majority of our audit staff have professional accounting designations and many have additional advanced degrees and/or certification in business, public administration, law, education, social and environmental sciences, human resources or health care. The Office is licensed as a Chartered Professional Accountant/Chartered Accountant Training Office to train students in obtaining their CPA/CA designation. We are proud to have supported student audit associates in this role for over 30 years. The Auditor General is the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia's independent auditor. Under the Auditor General Act, the Office of the Auditor General serves the people of British Columbia and their elected representatives by conducting independent audits and advising on how well government is managing its responsibilities and resources.
