James Gref has a diverse work experience spanning over several companies and industries. James began their career as an audit cadet at Morse Group in 1991 and worked there until 1994. Gref then moved on to PwC, where they worked as an Audit Senior from 1995 to 1997. After that, they took on various financial accounting, management accounting, and project management roles at Financial Times from 1997 to 1999. Gref then joined BT Financial Group as a Senior Accountant in 1999.

In 2000, Gref briefly worked as a Project Leader at GE Capital before transitioning to different roles within the company. At GE Capital, they worked as a Financial Planning & Analysis Manager, Finance Leader for Equipment Finance ANZ, CFO for GE Commercial Finance in Southeast Asia & Greater China, and CFO for Custom Fleet, ANZ. Gref also served as the CFO for Fleet & Equipment Finance, ANZ, where they helped integrate two of GE's businesses.

In 2011, Gref joined GE in the role of GE Operational Controller for Australia, NZ & PNG. James then became the Region Controller & Shared Services Leader for GE's operations in the same region. Gref later assumed the role of the Acting CFO for GE Australia, New Zealand & Papua New Guinea, where they successfully met financial commitments and influenced the executive team.

In 2016, Gref joined WiseTech Global (previously CargoWise) as a Senior Finance Specialist. James was responsible for assisting with the company's transition from a private to an ASX listed company. During this time, Gref focused on implementing cash flow forecasting, hedging programs, and simplifying banking processes.

In 2016, Gref returned to BT Financial Group as the Head of Performance, responsible for providing insights and analytics to drive growth across the wealth division of Westpac. James later took on the role of Head of Wealth Analytics & Insights, leading a team of over 40 people.

Most recently, Gref joined OFX in 2018 as a Project Manager before assuming the role of Head of Pricing and Commercial Finance APAC in 2019.

James Gref obtained a Chartered Accountant degree from Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand in the year 1996. Prior to that, they received a BA in Business (Accounting) from Charles Sturt University from 1991 to 1994. Additionally, they have obtained several certifications including Bystander Training, Confronting Bias, Cultivating Cultural Competence and Inclusion, and Unconscious Bias from LinkedIn in February 2021. James also completed the GE Experienced Financial Leadership Program and earned a Green Belt (Six sigma) certification from GE in November 2008 and July 2003 respectively.
