Gerry Schwartz

Founder & Chairman at Onex

As the Founder and Chairman of Onex, Gerry’s principles of value creation and entrepreneurial management suffuse all of Onex’ activities. The climate of incisive analysis, healthy debate and collegial interaction that has been created at Onex and with our partners is a direct reflection of Gerry’s personal style. He has been actively involved in Onex’ major acquisitions, growth strategies and value realizations.

Before establishing Onex in 1984, Gerry was the co-founder and President of CanWest Capital. Prior to that he worked at a major Wall Street investment banking firm where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions. His previous experience also includes the practice of corporate law in Canada.

Gerry has been appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada and inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame. He serves as a director of Indigo Books & Music Inc. He is also an Honorary Director of The Bank of Nova Scotia and is a Director, Governor, or Trustee of a number of other organizations, including The Simon Wiesenthal Center.

Gerry has been awarded Honorary Doctoral degrees from five Universities. He holds an M.B.A. from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and an LL.B. and B.Comm. from the University of Manitoba.
