Barry D. Collins

Superintendent at ONSLOW COUNTY SCHOOLS

On March 1, 2019, Dr. Barry Collins took office as the Superintendent of Onslow County Schools. A belief in and reliance on servant leadership guides Dr. Collins’ work as superintendent. He understands the unique needs of the district’s large military population and his experience and dedication to OCS is a proven asset for the school community.

An early highlight of his tenure as OCS superintendent includes collaborative work with Onslow County Government resulting in development of a comprehensive and sustainable school funding agreement. Dr. Collins has also overseen the opening of the Eastern North Carolina Regional Skills Center and the beginning of construction on two new elementary schools.

Dr. Collins has enjoyed a long and successful career in public education spanning almost thirty years in the state of North Carolina. Prior to assuming his current role, he served OCS as associate superintendent for human resources and student services. Prior to that, Dr. Collins served Jones County Schools as principal of Maysville Elementary and director of human resources. He began his career in public education with OCS as a math and science teacher at Northwoods Park Middle School and then as assistant principal at Swansboro Middle School.

Dr. Collins’ academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in middle grades education from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. He went on to earn a master’s degree in educational administration and a doctorate in educational leadership from East Carolina University. Dr. Collins also is a proud graduate of White Oak High School in Onslow County.
