Grant Cochrane has a diverse work experience spanning different industries. Grant started their career as a Currency Option Trader at RBC in 1990 and later worked at Credit Suisse and Citibank in the same role. In 2010, Cochrane became a Director at AG Foley Ltd, the South Island's largest plumbing and drainage firm. After leaving AG Foley Ltd in 2016, they became the CEO of Oritain in 2011, a company that specializes in improving food safety through unique geographical indicators within products. Additionally, Cochrane has also owned Totara Hills, a farming operation with a focus on sustainability and recognized for environmental awards.

Grant Cochrane attended Otago Boys High School from 1983 to 1987. Grant then went on to study at the University of Otago from 1987 to 1989, where they obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a specialization in Finance.
