Jon Wilks

Senior Policy Advisor at Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies

Jon Wilks is a distinguished professional with extensive experience in diplomatic roles and policy advisory positions. Currently serving as a Distinguished Fellow at the Atlantic Council of the US and an Advisory Board Member at HAP Advisors since July 2025, Wilks has also held significant roles as a Senior Policy Advisor at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies and the Iraq Britain Business Council since January and July 2024, respectively. Previously, Wilks was the British Ambassador to Qatar from March 2020 to December 2023, and held ambassadorial positions in Iraq, Oman, and Yemen during various periods from 2010 to 2019. As a UK Special Representative for Syria from April 2012 to October 2014, Wilks has demonstrated a strong commitment to international relations. Wilks holds a Master of Philosophy in International Relations from the University of Oxford, a Master of Arts in Middle East Politics from Durham University, and a Bachelor of Science in Natural Sciences from Durham University, alongside ongoing studies at the Joint Services Command and Staff College.

The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies is an institution for the advanced study of Islam and the Muslim world, incorporated under Royal Charter. It was established in 1985 to encourage the scholarly study of Islam and the Islamic world. It is governed by a Board of Trustees consisting of scholars and statesmen from different parts of the world, alongside representatives of the University of Oxford. 'The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies has done so much to promote and improve our understanding of the Islamic world. That mission has great importance in our increasingly interdependent world. The relationships between Islam and the West matter more today than ever before.'​ HRH The Prince of Wales, Patron of the Centre. The Centre provides a meeting point for the Western and Islamic worlds of learning. At Oxford it contributes to the multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary study of the Islamic world.
