Liang Xu

Remote Sensing scientist at Pachama

Liang (Alan) Xu's work experience begins with their role as a Remote Sensing Scientist at Pachama starting in 2022. Prior to this, they worked as a JPL Affiliate and JIFRESSE Assistant Researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles from 2020 to 2022. At UCLA, they focused on investigating machine learning algorithms for Lidar/Radar data fusion and developing biomass retrieval algorithms.

From 2017 to 2020, Liang worked as a JPL Affiliate and Caltech Postdoc at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Here, they developed global vegetation carbon dynamics and fuel combustion modeling using satellite data and various techniques such as convolutional neural networks. Liang (Alan) also conducted research on estimating carbon stocks and classifying secondary forest in Amazonia using remote sensing data.

Before their time at NASA JPL, Liang was a Postdoctoral Researcher at UCLA from 2013 to 2017. Here, they worked on projects involving national forest inventory estimates, mapping forest structure, and analyzing Amazon forest productivity and seasonality.

Prior to their research positions, Liang worked as a Research Assistant at Boston University from 2008 to 2013. Liang (Alan)'swork at BU focused on studying vegetation changes in the Arctic-Boreal region, temperature and vegetation seasonality diminishment, and the impact of drought on the vegetation of Amazonia.

Liang's earliest work experience was as a Staff Member at the State Oceanic Administration in China from 2004 to 2008.

Overall, Liang (Alan) Xu's work experience spans a wide range of remote sensing techniques and applications, with a particular focus on vegetation analysis and carbon dynamics modeling.

Liang (Alan) Xu began their education at Fudan University in 1999, where they pursued a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Physics. Liang (Alan) completed their studies in 2003. Following this, they enrolled at Boston University in 2008, undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Geography. Liang (Alan) successfully concluded their doctoral studies in 2013.
