Byron Weckworth

Director, Conservation Genetics & Director, Snow Leopard Program at Panthera Corporation

Dr. Byron Weckworth joined Panthera’s Snow Leopard Program in 2012. Byron’s passion for conservation and biology began at a young age with an outdoors-oriented family in Montana and continued through his undergraduate degree at the University of Montana, an M.S. at Idaho State University, and his Ph.D. at the University of Calgary. His research experience has involved fieldwork across a variety of ecosystems from North Carolina swamps to the high alpine regions of Central Asia, on an equally varied number of species, including wolves, black bears, caribou, moose, and, of course, snow leopards. His research aims to address a wide spectrum of ecological and evolutionary questions pertinent to successful conservation. Byron’s goals at Panthera are to help produce rigorous scientific research and to work collaboratively to make such research accessible and applicable to the people and partner organizations that have the influence to impact the conservation of wild cats.
