Peer Tutor at Papaya

Mercedes Alejandro is currently a member of several professional organizations, including CodePath, Rewriting the Code, Reboot Representation, and SHPE, all from early 2023. In addition, Mercedes has served as a Peer Tutor, where responsibilities included beta testing a virtual tutoring program and tutoring peers in Java while accommodating various learning styles. From May to July 2024, Mercedes will hold the position of UTSA Data Science & AI Community Innovation Scholar. Prior experience includes working as a Behavioral Health Technician at Empower Behavioral Health and as a Clerk for Medina County Texas. Academically, Mercedes is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from The University of Texas at San Antonio, having previously earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the same institution.

At Papaya, they locate and hand-pick global STEM tutors who have a high level of emotional intelligence to help US-based students. This process makes high-quality tutoring that is worth well over $80/hr accessible to all students directly throughtheir schools.More importantly, they provide equity tools that help disadvantaged students who otherwise would not have access to these services.
