Robert G. McBean

Bob McBean has practiced civil litigation since 1978. Since the early 2000’s, he has focused his practice on the arbitration and mediation of commercial and insurance disputes.

Bob achieved the designation of Chartered Mediator (C.Med.) from the ADR Institute of Canada (ADRIC) in 2002. He has extensive practical experience in mediation having mediated hundreds of Queen’s Bench matters. Bob’s mediation experience includes the resolution of personal injury, insurance, commercial, construction, employment, and professional liability disputes.

Bob achieved the designation of Chartered Arbitrator (C.Arb.) from ADRIC in 2017. He has conducted numerous arbitrations both as sole arbitrator and Panel Chair in diverse matters including construction, commercial, partnership, shareholders’, lease and development agreement disputes. Mr. McBean has also been retained on numerous occasions as independent Referee in construction contract disputes.

Bob is active in the alternative dispute resolution community. He is a member of ADRIC, ADR Institute of Alberta (ADRIA), the Western Canadian Commercial Arbitration Society (WCCAS), the Alberta Municipal Affairs Med-Arb and Arbitration rosters, the ADRIC Commercial Arbitration Roster and the Canadian Transport Agency List of Arbitrators. He is a past Director of the Mediation and Restorative Justice Centre in Edmonton, past Chair of the Canadian Bar Association ADR Section and sessional lecturer in ADR at the University of Alberta. He has been recognized by Best Lawyers in Canada Directory in the field of alternative dispute resolution up to the present time, including “ADR Lawyer of the Year” in Edmonton in 2020.

In addition to his arbitration and mediation practice, Mr. McBean carries on an active and varied practice of law in such diverse areas as personal injury, insurance, commercial litigation, administrative law and the regulation of self-governing professions. He has appeared before all levels of courts in Alberta and the Northwest Territories. He was appointed Queen’s Counsel (Q.C.) on December 31, 2007.
