Mark Thissen

Mark Thissen is currently a Professor of Spatial Networks and Economic Development at the Department of Spatial Economics, School of Business and Economics, VU Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, a position held since May 2024. Thissen has extensive experience in economic research, serving as a Senior Researcher at Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving since 2004 and as a Visiting Researcher at JRC IPTS in 2012. Previous academic roles include Postdoctoral Researcher at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen from 2001 to 2004, where Thissen developed a Spatial Applied General Equilibrium Model, and Assistant Professor at the University of Twente from 2000 to 2004, focusing on European Integration and Transition Economics. Additionally, Thissen held a part-time lecturer position at the Institute of Social Studies in 1999-2000. Thissen earned a PhD in International Economics from the University of Groningen and an MSc in Economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam.
