Giulio Imbalzano

Data Scientist at PhAST Diagnostics

Giulio Imbalzano has a diverse range of work experience. Giulio is currently working at PhAST as a Data Scientist, where they are responsible for developing and managing machine learning models that predict the resistance of bacteria to antimicrobial agents. Giulio handles real-world data, including data cleaning, label noise, missing features, heavy class imbalance, and heavy data augmentation. Giulio is also recognized as an expert on the data used in their work and has been responsible for explaining it to new hires and colleagues.

Prior to this, Giulio worked as a PHD Student at EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) from 2016 to 2021. During this time, they focused on applying machine learning methods to optimize the description of complex, high-dimensional systems in materials science. Giulio specifically used feature selection methods to reduce computational costs while retaining critical information. Additionally, they developed techniques to quantify the uncertainty of supervised learning methods when predicting material properties.

Giulio's earlier work experience includes a role as a Tutor at Cooperativa sociale Alileggere, where they worked from May 2016 to November 2016.

Giulio Imbalzano completed their education in a chronological manner. Giulio first attended Politecnico di Milano from 2009 to 2012, where they obtained a degree in Ingegneria Energetica with the title "Laurea triennale." Giulio then continued their studies at the same institution and earned a Laurea Magistrale LM in Ingegneria Nucleare from 2012 to 2015. During this time, they also pursued a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Nuclear Engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology from 2013 to 2015.
