Charity Dean began their work experience in 1998 as a Lab Researcher at Oregon Health & Science University. Charity then worked as the Quality Assurance Coordinator at Lane Memorial Blood Bank from 2000 to 2001. In 2005, they served as a Resident Physician in General Surgery at Cottage Health, and later as a Resident Physician in Internal Medicine from 2008 to 2011. From 2011 to 2018, they held various roles at the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, including Physician Health Officer and Attending Physician. In 2018, they joined the California Department of Public Health as an Assistant Director, and later acted as the State Public Health Officer from July to October 2019. Currently, they are the Founder and CEO of The Public Health Company, where they lead the development of a biosecurity platform for enterprise risk management.
Charity Dean obtained a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, and French from Oregon State University between 1995 and 2000. Charity then pursued their medical education at Tulane University School of Medicine, where they earned a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) in General Surgery from 2001 to 2005. During the same period, they also obtained a Master's degree in Tropical Medicine from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
In terms of certifications, Charity Dean became Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in October 2011. Additionally, they received the Physician and Surgeon certification from the Medical Board of California in 2007.
