Dale Barnard

Lead Software Engineer at Phi Optics

Dale Barnard has extensive work experience as a software engineer and developer in various companies. Dale started their career in 2004 at The AEgis Technologies Group, Inc., where they worked as a contract developer and contributed to C#/MFC enhancements and bug fixes. In 2005, they joined Valence Technology as a contract senior software engineer and played a vital role in bringing professional best practices to the company. Dale collaborated with engineers from different fields to create engineering and production tools for lithium batteries. During this time, they also created a multi-channel battery-discharge production tool that was later successfully transferred to the China facility.

In 2008, Dale joined Charles Schwab as a contract senior developer and became the first experienced WPF programmer hired for the StreetSmart Edge trading application. Dale worked closely with architects to lay the groundwork for a modern desktop application using C#/WPF/MVVM. Dale continued their contract roles, joining Electronic Compliance Solutions in 2010 and Intersil Zilker Labs the same year as a contract developer and software engineer, respectively. At Electronic Compliance Solutions, they collaborated with the Projekt 202 company for UI/UX and completed a touch-screen kiosk architecture using C#/WPF/MVVM. Dale also provided training to web developers transitioning their skills to desktop-application architecture. At Intersil Zilker Labs, Dale developed XML configuration files and designed a drag-drop interface to help customers arrange multiple ICs in a system.

In 2012, Dale worked as a contract software engineer at Silicon Laboratories, where they collaborated with electrical engineers to add features to a complex C#/WinForms front-end for various digital radio-tuner chips. Dale increased the source-code modularity to lengthen the maintainable lifespan of the legacy code base and prepare for a transition to C#/WPF/MVVM. The next year, they joined Redbird Flight Simulations, Inc. as a senior software engineer and played a crucial role in R&D of a Bell 47G motion-platform helicopter simulator for flight schools. Dale overcame limitations in Prepar3D simulation software and synchronized multiple computers to drive 16 monitors.

In 2014, Dale had two contract roles. Dale worked as a contract senior developer at CLEAResult, where they restructured a C#/WPF/MVVM application to reduce bugs and implemented new features for air-conditioning technicians to enter field data and submit analysis data to a server. Dale also worked at Thorlabs as a software engineer and served as the technical lead for the software team. Dale retrofitted thread safety and error recovery into a WinForms imaging application and solved a USB-bus-stall problem to detect and recover from strikes during expensive camera electrostatic discharge (ESD) tests.

Most recently, Dale has become the Lead Software Engineer at Phi Optics, Inc., starting in 2022.

Dale Barnard obtained a Teaching Certificate in Education from the University of Texas at Austin, where they studied from 1994 to 1996. Prior to that, they pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Colorado Boulder, from 1987 to 1992. In addition to their formal education, Dale also holds an advanced fluency certification in Spanish from Duolingo, which they obtained in December 2016.
