Carmen Scullino

Research Scientist at PolyActiva

Carmen Scullino has been in the field of research since 2011. Carmen started as a Summer Internship at Monash University in 2011, then worked as a Laboratory Mentor from 2014 to 2017. In this role, they mentored five students, providing supervision and guidance on the conduct of experimental procedures and lab protocols, as well as demonstrating safe handling of chemicals. Carmen also presented project overviews and provided relevant literature and guidance of scientific report writing. In 2017, they became a Research Assistant at Monash University. In 2018, they began working at PolyActiva as a Research Scientist in the Monomer theme, involved in the synthesis of monomers and co-monomers for incorporation into drug-polymer API. Using an innovative technology, these drug-polymer ocular implants are used in the treatment of glaucoma and endophthalmitis and are currently in clinical trials. Carmen was responsible for process development and optimisation of new chemical entities, reference standards and process impurities for testing, use in polymeric pro-drugs and support of regulatory filings.

Carmen Scullino attended Monash University from 2010 to 2017, where they obtained a Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Major in Medicinal Chemistry in 2012, an Honours Degree of the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science in Medicinal Chemistry in 2013, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D), Pharmaceutical Sciences (Medicinal Chemistry) in 2017.
