Madhu Bala Nath started her career as a women (WID) development officer with the Swedish International Development Authority, (SIDA) in India in the early eighties. In 1986, Madhu moved on to carrying these issues to the policy level working with the United Nations Development Fund for Women, (UNIFEM) as their adviser in India and later on as their adviser for India and Indo China.
In 1994 Madhu started her work on HIV/AIDS working first with the UNDP Regional project on HIV and development for Asia and the Pacific and then as the UNIFEM/UNAIDS gender and HIV Adviser based in New York until June 2000. She moved to the Asian region in 2000 to work as the UNIFEM Regional Adviser, gender and HIV /AIDS, Asia and the Pacific, based in India.
Between October 2003 and October 2008, Madhu Bala Nath worked with the International Planned Parenthood Federation as their Regional Director for South Asia, based in New Delhi. She worked with UN Women in South Asia from May 2009 to May 2012 as their Regional Policy Adviser providing policy advice in the five pillars of the work of UN Women.
During 2012-2013 she was the Senior Policy Adviser for Global Health Strategies in India engaged in building public private partnerships to reduce infant and child mortality in India.
Since April 2015, Madhu served the Country Representative and Country Director of Engender Health in India for 20 months and retired from the organization in December 2016. She was responsible for directing the program implementation in 4 states of India including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat. The focus of work was supporting the public health system in India to deliver client friendly, gender sensitive family planning and reproductive health services. Over the 20 months Madhu consolidated Engender Health’s office and team, and contributed to heighten the performance of the organization and build a strong program in India.
Madhu is now serving as a director on the governing boards of three organizations namely Charities Aid Foundation, HIV/AIDS Alliance and Population Services International in India.
