Nishani Athukorale has over 25 years of work experience in various roles within the Sri Lankan government. Nishani started their career at the Ministry of Finance and Planning in 1994 as a Development Assistant. Nishani then moved on to the Ministry of Plan Implementation, where they worked as a Development Officer from 1997 to 2003. Nishani then joined the Ministry of Urban Development and Water Supply as a Development Officer from 2004 to 2009. Nishani then transitioned to the Ministry of Defence & Urban Development, where they served as an Assistant Director from 2009 to 2014. In 2015, Nishani moved to the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, where they worked as an Assistant Director until 2019. Their most recent role is at the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, where they are currently serving as a Deputy Director. Nishani also has experience working at Port City Colombo as an Assistant Project Director since 2016.
Nishani Athukorale began their education at the Roman Catholic School, where they attended from 1974 to 1979. Nishani then went on to Princess of Wales College from 1980 to 1987. After completing their secondary education, they attended the University of Colombo from 1990 to 1994, where they earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Later, in 2000 to 2001, Nishani pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Colombo, specializing in Subnational Level Development Planning.
