Carey Balaban

Carey Balaban is an accomplished academic and researcher with extensive experience in the fields of health and preparedness. Since 2011, Carey has served as an Academic Fellow at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies. In addition, Carey has been a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh since August 1988, where roles include Director of the Center for National Preparedness, Professor of Otolaryngology, Neurobiology, Communication Sciences & Disorders, and Bioengineering, as well as Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. Prior to this, Carey was an Assistant Professor of Anatomy and Surgery (Ophthalmology) at Penn State University from 1982 to 1988. Educational credentials include a PhD in Anatomy from the University of Chicago (1975-1979) and a BA in History from Michigan State University (1971-1975).

The Potomac Institute for Policy Studies is an independent, 501(c)(3), not-for-profit public policy research institute. The Institute identifies and aggressively shepherds discussion on key science, technology, and national security issues facing our society. From these discussions and forums, we develop meaningful policy options and ensure their implementation at the intersection of business and government.
