Born in Mexico but raised in the US, Libni Haniel brings years of personal experience to Preemptive Love’s work with migrant and refugee populations. While working as a professor in several universities in Ciudad Juarez, he also frequently volunteered with migrants in the various shelters in the city, bringing them English classes and connecting them with other local resources. In early 2020, Libni Haniel found a home in Preemptive Love, and he now puts to use his passion for helping refugees as a Programs Officer on the US/Mexico border. Outside of work, Libni Haniel enjoys couch-surfing while traveling the country, playing guitar and singing in his church’s worship band, and attempting to keep his fishing hobby alive while living in the desert.

Abbas is from the city of Sulaymaniyah in Kurdistan (Northern Iraq). He has spent the last four years working for nonprofit organizations and is very passionate about social justice, equal rights, reproductive rights, and community building.He grew increasingly interested in activism and advocacy after he volunteered at a refugee camp and felt the deep need to give back to others in difficult situations.Abbas first heard about Preemptive Love through the church he is a part of, and quickly fell in love with the organization.

Growing up during the Iraq war and moving out of her childhood home multiple times made Dalia who she is today. She feels lucky she had the chance to live in two different cultures and learn two languages from an early age.
She believes that all human beings are born free and equal. Dalia graduated as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, and volunteered during her college years to raise funds for orphanages.
Dalia lives in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq and loves to spend time with her family, walk her dog and enjoy nature, and listen to classical music with a cup of coffee.

Born in the borderplex region of Ciudad Juarez and El Paso Texas, Manuel had the opportunity to experience two cultures, which impacted his way of seeing life. With a degree in business administration and 6 years of experience in customer service, Manuel enjoys finding new solutions to problems. Manel loves to encourage people and has facilitated more than 150 coaching sessions a year helping people create change in their lives. Manuel loves to be with people and to listen to their stories. He’s active in his community. In his free time, he loves to play soccer, watch movies, listen to music, or just take a walk and play Pokémon Go.

Afnan was born in Saudi Arabia after her parents fled the civil war in Somalia. When she was 7, they moved to Syria and spent an incredible decade in Damascus. In 2008, Afnan and her family relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana as refugees. She has always been passionate about working for and with refugees and displaced people and volunteered with the same organization that took care of her family. Afnan attended [Indiana University](/org/indiana-university) and received her bachelor’s in International Studies with a concentration in Human Rights and International Law. In the summer of 2019, Afnan interned with Preemptive Love as an English instructor. While at [Indiana University](/org/indiana-university), Afnan taught Arabic for three years and served as co-host for IU’s Preemptive Love chapter. Afnan wants to help change the ideas that lead to war globally.

Mourad has always aspired to help people in some way, doing things here and there, but never really satiated his desire to assist. After graduating from university, Mourad entered the professional workforce. Following some time developing his skills in project management, he was blessed with an excellent opportunity to join Preemptive Love as a Technology Project Coordinator. Mourad now has the opportunity to grow his career path and have his desire to help others realized at the same time. With a spark in his eye, Mourad eagerly marches toward the future and what it beholds.

Living through four wars and surviving the last war alone as her family fled Iraq to find safe heaven created the pacifist that Sarah is today. She spent the past 17 years of her life on the peacemaking path trying to provide for, protect, and help the persecuted minorities in the Middle East, while trying to build bridges between all the different religious groups and communities. Sarah has focused all her efforts in the past few years on youth and educational development and women empowerment through reaching out and looking for talented young people and push to create a chance for them, providing lecturing and workshop to those who have no access, and creating jobs and business ideas to change the economical and employment scene in Iraq. Sarah tries to lead by example to change the cultural religious perception of women, youth, and general ethics.
She was awarded in 2016 the Peace and Reconciliation Prize at the House of Lords in London and in 2017 the Tanenbaum Peace in Action Prize (the first Iraqi to ever have the price and the youngest to have ever gotten it).

Kayla is passionate about the intersection of nurturing the land, uniting communities, and mobilizing dreams. It is this passion that led her to Preemptive Love. The past seven years have equipped her with US based and international non-profit work in urban and rural regenerative agriculture, education, marketing, and leadership. When not on the farm, she can be found foraging in the forest, exploring the beauty of diverse cultures that fill this world, or creating new worlds with her nephews and niece.

Since the beginning of the Venezuelan crisis, Lenin has taken action to help those who suffer the most. First, as a student advocating for human rights, and after that working with different NGOs to bring aid to vulnerable communities in Venezuela.

Born in and eternally in love with Mexico City, Luis has been a passionate Human Resources professional for almost 15 years since graduating from La Salle University with a degree in business administration.
Experienced in positions in areas such as talent acquisition, onboarding, compensation and benefits, wellness, performance, learning, talent, engagement and culture, he comes from different backgrounds and industries such as pharmaceuticals, startups, real estate, media and consulting firms, one of them in which he learned the Design Thinking, Employee Experience and Agile HR methodologies, where he is certified by the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management. This is knowledge and experience that today connects Luis with Preemptive Love as a People & Talent Global Strategist.
Luis lives as an ambassador of the belief that our life is not about ourselves: our life should be about everyone we touch.
He also likes to study and learn about biohacking techniques to improve his quality of life and everyone’s around him, as well as practicing crossfit, running, hiking, spending time with friends and being a Cuban salsa dancer as for the last 15 years.

Faith Brooks is the current Community Director at [Preemptive Love Coalition](/org/preemptive-love-coalition). Prior to their current position, they served as the Director of Programs and Innovation at Be the Bridge from August 2019 to April 2021. In this role, they oversaw the quality and success of all aspects of program operations, management, relationships, curriculum development, staff, and volunteer training and supervision. Faitth also developed strategic long-term program expansion goals and budgets, hired and managed a team of over 25 program managers, coordinators, interns, and contractors, and monitored program budgets and oversaw grant and contract compliances and evaluated programs outcomes.

During their time at Be the Bridge, Brooks also oversaw the development and production of video and written content for all 5 programs, executed program metrics for a Facebook grant of almost 1 million which focused on expanding the youth program and organizational infrastructure, supported the Be the Bridge Team in translating the strategic vision into actionable initiatives for volunteerism, advocacy, and other boots-on-the-ground activism opportunities, produced and led the creation of a Racial Trauma training course to help BIPOC, led the creation of content to further diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts faith-based organizations, and led successful marketing campaigns for fundraisers and product launches that raised over 500K. Faitth also developed revenue generation through the creation and development of content that generated over 200K in annual revenue.

In addition to their work with Be the Bridge, Brooks has also worked with the Executive Team with fundraising strategies and events and overseen the operations and technical production goals and objectives for the programs team. Faitth has attended and planned professional development

Faith Brooks has a certificate in Women's Entrepreneurship from [Cornell University](/org/cornell-university), a Master of Social Work (MSW) from The University of Texas at Arlington, and a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) from Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Saba was born in Baghdad, but lives in her favorite place, Sulaymaniyah. She majored in Business & Accounting. From the time she was young, she wanted to be the cause of changing a small part of the world. She notes that causing positive change is a long road that requires a lot of effort, but this has always been her passion in life. She joined Preemptive Love because our mission suits her pursuit of that aim. She loves working at Preemptive Love because it is so unique to work alongside people from different backgrounds who all share one goal.

Deako was Born in Sulaymaniah, in the Kurdish region of Iraq, He graduated from the American University of Iraq, Sulaymaniyah with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Deako started his career in sales before changing his career path toward the humanitarian sector. He is always motivated and eager to learn and improve the work that he is doing. He likes to improve his robotics engineering skills and learn new languages in his free time.

Sara is a recent graduate with six years of nonprofit experience in Kurdistan, Iraq. She is passionate and focused on providing equal opportunities for all regardless of sex, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, and socioeconomic background. Sara joined our Member Recruitment Team in February 2022. Besides her passion for human rights, she spends her time admiring the works of her favourite musicians and authors.



Sara Salih

Since graduating in Computer Techniques Engineering from the University of Baghdad in 2007, Hasan has completed many certified technical training courses including a Project Management for Professionals (PMP) certification in 2017. Throughout his 15 years of experience in humanitarian aid and development, Hasan has designed innovative interventions, spearheaded multisector programs, managed large teams of people, and executed collaborative strategies to improve people’s lives. Within the humanitarian sector, Hasan specializes in livelihood and workforce development. He has facilitated cash assistance to build workforce capacity, establishing methodologies, systems, and tools to measure and track performance and encourage accountability to donors as well as communities. He has also created business development and technical training curricula to encourage sustainable development in Iraq’s workforce sector. Hasan’s fierce commitment to communities’ wellbeing and long-term development brought him to Preemptive Love.

Kara is an award-winning writer with almost 20 years of journalism, public relations, marketing, and broadcast experience. She is passionate about storytelling, leadership, and life-long learning. Kara and her family love to travel the world and have even hosted international visitor groups at her home in Dallas. At these dinners, she has experienced how fostering connections break down borders, shatter barriers, and create a more peaceful world and she continues that same work at Preemptive Love.

Kara Schectman

Kristina has more than six years of experience in program development, research, and advocacy focused on human rights, development, and humanitarian programming in the Middle East. She has spent the last three years living and working in Iraq. In addition to Iraq, her work has taken her to Greece, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, where she worked with refugee and migrant worker communities. Her writing on human rights and humanitarian issues in the Middle East has been published in The New York TImes, [Quartz](/org/quartz), Middle East Eye, and other global media outlets. Kristina is a human rights activist deeply committed to fighting injustice and ending war. In her spare time, you can find her spoiling her Persian cat from Baghdad and perfecting her Syrian-Armenian, great-grandmother’s homemade baklava recipe.

Anna was born in Wroclaw, Poland. She first heard about Preemptive Love when she was working in Cambodia for a small bicycle social enterprise called Soksabike. Anna loves social entrepreneurship, anthropology, and printing business cards. She hopes to one day start up her own crazy venture.

Lauren is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, FIFA Women’s World Cup champion, and US Soccer Athlete of the Year. Lauren was born with a heart defect and came to Preemptive Love’s work through our early efforts providing lifesaving heart surgeries for Iraqi children. She overcame her early health challenges and went on to become one of the most celebrated stars in women’s soccer and an inspiration to children overcoming medical challenges everywhere. Lauren and her husband, Jrue, an NBA All Star guard, were generous donors before she brought her years of team leadership to the Preemptive Love Board of Directors.

Seth Freeman

Maritza has spent the last twenty years working with non-profit causes that align with her vision of a world that honors and supports every member of our human family and our natural environment. She has dedicated her career and board service to immigrant rights and advocacy, social justice, global poverty, reproductive rights, youth mobilization and leadership development, and international peacemaking work. She is currently based out of Houston, Texas but spends a considerable amount of her time traveling this big, beautiful world. Outside of work, you can find her practicing Baptiste Yoga, exploring hidden culinary gems, and leading social justice and antiracism workshops.

With more than a decade of experience in advancing the mission, vision, and goals of non-profit and socially responsible for-profit companies, Sarah Beth has helped to lead the financial growth and expansion of a wide range of successful organizations including The Jane Goodall Institute, United Nations Women’s Humanitarian Action Program, African Leadership Academy, and the Mandela Scholars Program. Closer to home, Sarah Beth has worked with [Pride at Work](/org/pride-at-work), [City University of New York](/org/city-university-of-new-york), and many others. Her articles on impact investing and trends in global philanthropy have been published by The DO School, ZEIT Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, and others. She is a Mentor with MIT’s LaunchX program and routinely consults with social entrepreneurs and those seeking to support innovative projects in civil society.

Ellen Meyer Shorb has spent her career helping visionaries, teams, and boards successfully address economic and social inequities in the world.

For the last 20 years, Ellen has served as the principal of Blue Sage Partners, a strategy consulting company that focuses on building high functioning teams. As a facilitator, she builds the trust and buy-in necessary to negotiate agreement on a shared direction. She works at the big picture level to delineate key strategic priorities and on the ground, to develop a tactical plan. A specialty in her practice is to develop leadership capacity and stronger teams while accomplishing a concrete business task, such as developing a strategic plan or drafting a funding proposal.

Jeff offers over 25 years of experience in managing projects, programs, people, and development teams in financial, mortgage, tax, CRM/loyalty and transportation industries. He is working across Preemptive Love to establish industry standards and processes to ensure technology solutions allow the entire team to focus on their main goal of stopping the spread of violence. Originally from Colorado, Jeff calls Texas home. He has also worked for a nonprofit organization that provides sanctuary to big cats (tigers, lions, jaguars, leopards, etc.), serving as a volunteer and on the Board of Directors.
