Prof. Dr. med. Gerd U. Auffarth, FEBO has a long and distinguished career in the field of ophthalmology. Prof. Dr. med. Gerd began their work experience in 1992 as a Post-Doc Max Kade Foundation Senior Research Fellow at the Medical University of South Carolina. Prof. Dr. med. Gerd then became a Research Fellow of the German Research Council (DFG) in 1994 at the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - German Research Foundation. In 1996, they joined the Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg (UKHD) as Professor and Chairman, Acting Chairman (Kommissarischer Ärztlicher Direktor), Deputy Director (Stellvertretender Direktor, Leitender Oberarzt), and Full Staff Faculty (Oberarzt). In 2002, they became the Director of the International Vision Correction Research Centre (IVCRC). In 2006, they were appointed Director of the Steinbeis Research Center (SU1106) The DJ Apple Vision Correction Research Centre. In 2012, they were appointed Director of The David J Apple Center for Vision Research, Secretary General (Gerneralsekretär) German Soc. for Cataract and Refractive Surgery (GSCRS/DGII), and Vice-President German Soc. For Cataract and Refractive Surgery (GSCRS/DGII). Prof. Dr. med. Gerd was also elected President of the German Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery (GSCRS/DGII) in 2012. In 2015, they became an Independent Director, Board of Directors, Aufsichtsratmitglied at Presbia. In 2018, they were elected Board Member of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS). Finally, in 2020, they joined Outlook Therapeutics, Inc. as a Member, Board of Directors/ Aufsichtsratsmitglied.

Prof. Dr. med. Gerd U. Auffarth, FEBO obtained their Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from RWTH Aachen University in 1990. Prior to this, they completed internships in Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Ophthalmology at the University of Leicester, Tropical and Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Hopital Albert Schweitzer, Lambarene, Gabun, and Surgery and Ocular Pharmacology at Turun yliopisto - University of Turku.
