Stefan Budach

Bioinformatician & Machine Learning Researcher at Quantgene

Stefan Budach has a diverse work experience in the field of bioinformatics and machine learning. Stefan is currently working as a Bioinformatician and Machine Learning Engineer at Quantgene, starting from January 2020. Prior to this role, Stefan worked at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics for several years. Stefan started as a Student Research Assistant in 2013, where they were involved in implementing a web application for the simulation of cellular systems. In 2014, they interned in the Department of Computational Molecular Biology and later became a Student Research Assistant in the RNA Bioinformatics group. During this time, Stefan focused on the interpretability of machine learning algorithms, particularly convolutional neural networks, for biological sequence classification. Their work also involved the analysis of eQTLs and their effects on gene and miRNA expression. Stefan's work at the Max Planck Institute continued as a PhD Student from 2015 to 2019, during which they published a python-based deep learning library. Prior to their work at the Max Planck Institute, Stefan interned at the Freie Universität Berlin at the faculty of Veterinary Medicine, where they created tools to detect bacteriophage DNA integration and analyzed phylogeny.

Stefan Budach pursued their education in the field of Bioinformatics at Freie Universität Berlin. Stefan obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from the same institution between 2010 and 2013. Following this, they continued their studies at Freie Universität Berlin and completed a Master of Science (MS) degree in Bioinformatics from 2013 to 2015. Stefan Budach went on to further advance their academic career by enrolling in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Bioinformatics at Freie Universität Berlin, which they successfully completed between 2015 and 2020.
