Amairelys Barroeta Seijas

Senior Scientist– Process Development at QuellTX

Amairelys Barroeta Seijas has extensive experience in the field of immunology and gene therapy. Amairelys currently works as a Senior Scientist in Process Development at Quell Therapeutics, starting in 2022. Prior to this, they served as a Research Associate at UCL from 2017 to 2022, where they focused on the development and optimization of gene therapy protocols for primary immune deficiencies. Amairelys was particularly interested in X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLP) types 1 and 2.

Amairelys also worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" from 2012 to 2015, where they managed and coordinated a research project on molecular factors involved in angiogenesis and CD8 T cell response. Amairelys gained further research experience as a Research Biologist at Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù in 2011, investigating complex innate and adaptive immunodeficiencies with a focus on regulatory T and B cells.

In 2008, Amairelys held the position of Research Assistant Professor at the Central University of Venezuela. Amairelys conducted research on potential targets for chemotherapeutic treatment of leishmaniasis, specifically studying enzymes essential for the survival of intracellular pathogens in macrophages and phospholipid binding proteins in Leishmania. Amairelys also participated as a Professor Assistant of the Biochemistry Unit at the Faculty of Biology.

Amairelys began their research career as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the Immunology Institute in Caracas, Venezuela from 2006 to 2007. Amairelys gained experience in cellular techniques and molecular biology, focusing on the effect of natural compounds on the production of reactive nitrogen and oxygen species.

Throughout their career, Amairelys has demonstrated a dedication to conducting research that makes a difference in the lives of individuals, particularly in the field of immunology and gene therapy.

Amairelys Barroeta Seijas completed their education with a Ph.D. in Immunology and Applied Biotechnology from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Their doctoral research focused on Primary Immunodeficiencies and was carried out from 2008 to 2012. In addition, they also pursued a short-term fellowship at UCL in 2010, specifically in the Department of Immunology and Molecular Pathology. Prior to their Ph.D., Amairelys earned their undergraduate degree in Biology from Universidad Central de Venezuela, specializing in Cell Biology. Amairelys completed their undergraduate studies between 2002 and 2007.
