Marjolein Spronk has a diverse work experience in the field of data science and neuroscience. Starting in 2006, they worked as an intern at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, where they conducted a brain imaging project using functional MRI. Marjolein then moved on to Maastricht University as a Graduate Research Student, managing multiple projects on brain development, working memory, and attention using EEG and behavioral measures. During this time, they also published their doctoral thesis and mentored junior researchers.
In 2012, Marjolein joined the University of Birmingham as a Research Associate, where they conducted research at the Cognitive Neuroimaging Lab. Their responsibilities included coding analysis scripts and recruiting volunteers for perceptual learning projects.
From 2012 to 2015, Marjolein worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at KU Leuven. In this role, they designed a comprehensive multimodal imaging study to discover brain area functions using structural and functional MRI. Marjolein also managed multiple deliverables, including mapping visual, auditory, and tactile processing in human and non-human primates, and finding functionally similar brain areas for face processing across species.
After their time at KU Leuven, Marjolein joined Rutgers University - Newark as a Postdoctoral Associate. Here, they analyzed brain connectivity in mental illness and applied machine learning algorithms to predict mental health status. Marjolein also developed analysis pipelines and used HPC environment to efficiently process neuroimaging data.
In 2019, Marjolein started working at Insight Data Science as a Data Science Fellow. During their time there, they developed a web app called "Remotely" to help remote workers find the perfect place to work from. Marjolein trained a model with a word2vec algorithm on reviews of NYC coffeeshops and created an interactive interface using Python, Flask, HTML, and AWS.
Currently, Marjolein is a Senior Scientist in the Data Science Group at Rancho BioSciences. Their responsibilities include developing automated metadata processing pipelines for various types of life science data and curating and analyzing publicly available and proprietary datasets to gain insights about disease mechanisms.
Marjolein Spronk's education history begins with their Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biological and Neuropsychology from Utrecht University, which they obtained between 2001 and 2007. During their time at Utrecht University, they also completed a Psychopharmacology MSc Internship from 2004 to 2005.
Afterward, Marjolein pursued a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience at Maastricht University from 2007 to 2012. Marjolein then went on to undertake a postdoctoral position at Rutgers University until 2017.
In terms of additional certifications, Marjolein obtained a Laboratory Animal Science certification from KU Leuven in February 2015.
