Melinda Duplessis began their work experience in 1999 as a Graduate Student Intern, Editor, and Writer for the graduate newsletter "Grad to Grad" at the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. Melinda then worked as a Teaching Assistant at the University of California, San Diego from 1998 to 2002. In 2002, they joined the University of Washington as a National Science Foundation Microbiology Fellow/Post-doctoral Researcher until 2005. In 2016, they joined RareCyte, Inc. as a Scientist and later transitioned to the role of Applications Scientist in July 2018.

Melinda Duplessis holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Marine Biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. Prior to earning their Ph.D., they pursued a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Biology from The City College of New York. Melinda's educational journey began with a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with Honors in Biology, which they also obtained from The City College of New York.
