James Backstrom, MD has a diverse and extensive work experience in the medical field. James began their career at Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo as a Pediatric Neuroradiologist in 1993. James then worked as a Pediatric, Neuroradiologist, and General Radiologist at Advanced Radiology Services, Devoss Children's Hospital, Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, MI from 1999 to 2002.

From 2002 to 2008, Dr. Backstrom joined Lucien Diagnostic Imaging as a Diagnostic Radiologist, Neuroradiologist, Pediatric Radiologist, Board Member, and Entrepreneur. Following this, they became the Chief Medical Officer at Foundation Radiology Group, holding the position from 2008 to 2018.

Dr. Backstrom's career continued to progress, and they later served as the President of Spinnaker Radiology and Telemedicine starting in 2019. James also took on the role of Chief Medical Officer at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital from 2019 to 2023.

In 2022, Dr. Backstrom became the Director of Clinical and Medical Affairs at Rayus Radiology (Foundation Division). Additionally, they served as an Advisor/Member of the Medical Malpractice Claims Committee at CHART Insurance in 2022.

Currently, Dr. Backstrom is the Chief Medical Officer of Foundation Radiology Group, specifically working with the Division of Rayus Radiology. James is also an Advisor/Consultant for Spin Tech MRI. Overall, Dr. Backstrom's expertise spans various areas of radiology, management, and medical affairs.

James Backstrom, MD received their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biology/Biological Sciences from Westminster College (PA) in 1980. James then attended the University of Pittsburgh and obtained their Doctor of Medicine degree in Medicine in 1984. Following that, they completed an Internal Medicine Internship at the United States Navy—Bethesda Naval Hospital from 1984 to 1985. James pursued their Radiology Residency at Duke University from 1989 to 1993, during which they also spent 6 months specializing in Adult Neuroradiology. James further pursued a Pediatric Radiology Fellowship at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo from 1993 to 1994. Additionally, they completed a Pediatric Neuroradiology Fellowship at the University of Toronto in 1994.
