Position:  Director of Accounting/Controller

The Controller will be required to work under limited direction by the Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for providing day-to-day leadership of the Company's accounting operations and obligations. The Controller will execute the company's accounting policies in a manner that properly reflects the financial position of the company in accordance with US GAAP. As a key member of the accounting management team, the Controller will research and draft accounting policies to be adopted by the Company; manage the accounting close process; assist the CFO in building the accounting infrastructure; standardize, streamline and optimize processes; manage the risk-management process for the Company; and prepare analyses as needed. The Controller will also lead, coach, and mentor team members focused on, but not limited to general accounting principles, General Ledger, revenue recognition, A/P, A/R, collections, fixed assets and payroll.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • In partnership with the leadership, participates in the development of the overall accounting strategy.
  • Develops and implements short- and long-range departmental objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
  • Develops key internal accounting policies and procedures, including implementing and maintaining the policies and advising other departments.
  • Drives a timely monthly close process, quarterly and year-end close process.  Leads annual audit.
  • Performs general ledger analysis, accounts payable and accounts receivable supervision, and fixed asset management.
  • Timely and accurately records and reports on all financial transactions and account reconciliations.
  • Monitors cash balances and reports weekly cash forecast.
  • Coordinates outside audits with outside independent auditors and regulatory agencies and oversee preparation of all required items.
  • Hires, mentors, manages, and supports team members in all accounting positions.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions.
  • Manage chart of accounts, organization changes/additions, and entity criteria to support tax filings and reporting.
  • Support Statement of Indirect rate preparation and analysis as needed.
  • Special projects and ad hoc requests as needed.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Minimum Basic Requirements for Skills, Experience, Education, and Credentials:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field with 10 years of relevant accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 7 years of experience in accounting for a government contractor.
  • At least 2 years of experience leading and managing accounting teams required.
  • Must be located in the Washington Metropolitan Area.  May work remote but periodic meetings in office may be required.
  • Significant knowledge of finance, accounting, and cost control principles, including generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Government contract accounting experience, Cost Accounting Standards and FAR/DFARs knowledge.
  • Experience using Deltek Costpoint software is a plus.
  • Strong technical and analytical accounting skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to exercise discretion and professionalism with sensitive information.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced ever-changing environment while successfully managing the day-to-day responsibilities of the role and department.
  • Ability to plan, execute and deliver on projects in a timely manner, with the added ability to multi-task on varying projects and initiatives.

  • Proficient computer skills, including experience with MS Office software suite.
