Tom Carden

VP Of Engineering at Rewiring America

Tom Carden has a diverse work experience spanning over two decades. Tom is currently serving as the Head of Engineering at Rewiring America since November 2022. Prior to that, from 2012 to 2022, they worked at Square in various roles, including Engineering Lead for Square Financial Services, Software Engineer for Square Capital, Engineering Manager of Managers for the Point of Sale Platform, Engineering Manager for Analytics & Reporting, and Engineering Manager for Seller Operations, among others.

Before joining Square, Tom was the CTO and Co-founder of Bloom Studio Inc from 2011 to 2012. During this time, they led technology efforts across web, mobile, and server platforms, developing popular apps like Planetary and Biologic.

Tom also has experience as a Design Technologist in the freelance industry from 2010 to 2011, where they utilized their design and technological skills for various projects.

In the early stage of their career, Tom worked as a Designer/Coder at Stamen Design from 2006 to 2010, where they worked on interactive mapping and data visualization projects for well-known clients such as BBC, Microsoft, New York Times, Twitter, and Wikipedia.

Tom also served as an IT Product Developer at YRM Architects from 2002 to 2006, where they developed software packages and maintained the company website and intranet.

Additionally, Tom has contributed to academia as a Guest Lecturer at the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies, University College London from 2004 to 2006 and as a Research Intern at the Informatics Research Institute, University of Leeds in 2001.

Throughout their career, Tom has showcased their expertise in engineering, management, design, and technology, achieving significant accomplishments in various domains such as finance, analytics, reporting, and e-commerce.

Tom Carden completed their BSc (hons) degree in Artificial Intelligence with Mathematics from the University of Leeds from 1999 to 2002. Tom then pursued their MSc degree in Virtual Environments, Imaging, and Visualization from UCL between 2003 and 2005.
