Susan Smelt

Paintings Conservator at Rijksmuseum

Susan Smelt is a highly experienced paintings conservator currently working at the Rijksmuseum since December 2021, following a progression from Junior Paintings Conservator to Project Coordinator for the Operation Night Watch. Susan has a rich background in conservation, including significant projects at the Mauritshuis, where work included the restoration of Rembrandt's Saul and David and a collection of paintings by Jan Anthonisz van Ravesteyn. Holding multiple degrees in art history and conservation from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Groningen, Susan also contributed to the development of a pioneering Paint Sample Database at the Rijksmuseum and has operated her own conservation business, Susan Smelt Schilderijenrestauratie en conservering.
