Ian Burnett

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (STEM College) & VP at RMIT University

Prior to joining RMIT, Ian was Dean, Faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). At UTS he significantly grew the Faculty, pushing the rankings in some field to #1 in Australia and the top 20 worldwide. The Faculty has also built a reputation for building partnerships with industry and government with companies co-locating at the university around key facilities.

Ian is an active researcher in the Audio and Multimedia Signal Processing space when time in his schedule allows. He has more than 220 publications, as well as US patents and international standards contributions.

Before his tenure at UTS, Ian was the Head of School of Electrical and Computer Engineering here at RMIT University. During his time in this role, the school saw significant growth and expansion internationally with programs in Vietnam and Hong Kong, as well as significant research performance.

From 2003-2007, Ian was Australian Head of Delegation at the ISO/IEC standardisation group MPEG, where he also chaired the Multimedia Description Schemes subgroup. Ian remains involved in Australia’s international standards work in the space as the Australian chair for ISO/IEC SC29, the host committee for the MPEG and JPEG families of standards.
