James Lund has worked in the field of patent law and product development since 1983. In 1983, they began as an Engineering Summer Intern for IBM, where they worked on photolithography development and characterization. James then went on to pursue graduate school at UC Santa Barbara and Berkeley, where they conducted leading edge composites research with Tony Evans and helped set up the Materials Program. In 1988, they worked as an Advanced Research Scientist for 3M's Corporate Research Process Technologies Laboratory and was awarded a $50,000 Genesis Grant, which resulted in two patents for 3M. In 1990, Lund joined the startup PUR, where they held several positions including Head of Research & Development, Senior Project Engineer, and Engineer in Charge of Current Products. James coordinated R&D, product development, and project management for PUR, leading to the acquisition of the company by Proctor & Gamble. At PUR, they developed six technologies that were later patented and utilized by the company to develop new water purification products that generated over $250 million in sales. In 1996, Lund was a Knowledge Management Consultant for Teltech Resource Network, where they developed a 40k document fully hyperlinked proprietary intranet for Alcatel. In 2005, they served as a Patent Agent/IP Attorney at Hamre, Schumann, Muller, and Larson, where they collaborated with clients to draft necessary legal documents for patent applications, and prosecuted patent applications before the USPTO to obtain broad, strong patents for clients. In 2008, they worked as a Patent Attorney for Stolowitz, Ford, and Cowger, and in 2009, they became a Patent Attorney and Professionally Licensed Engineer at Lund Patent Law. Here, they led a wide range of client projects to improve their legal posture and business operations, including the turnaround of the Brita product line at Clorox. In 2022, James Lund began working as an Assistant General Counsel for Rondo Energy, where they are an expert in Patent Law, Competitive Intelligence, Product Development, Generating and Securing Intellectual Property, and General Law matters. James is a member of the WA, OR, and MN state bars, USPTO, and has three Professional Engineering licenses (mechanical, chemical, and metallurgical/materials science engineering).
James Lund received a Juris Doctor from Mitchell Hamline School of Law in 2006. James also holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from UC Santa Barbara, which they obtained in 1988. James previously obtained a Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1985. In 1992, they obtained three Professional Engineering Licenses (MY, ME, ChE) from the State of Minnesota. In 2005, they obtained a License to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office from the USPTO. In 2007, they obtained Law Licenses from the Office of Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon and the State of Oregon. James is also in the process of obtaining a Law License to practice in the state of Washington from the Washington State Bar Association.
