Julie Sanders

Vice-Chancellor & Principal at Royal Holloway, University of London

Julie Sanders joined Royal Holloway, University of London as Vice-Chancellor and Principal in October 2022. She was previously the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost at Newcastle University (2018-2022) and prior to that had been Newcastle's Faculty Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Humanities and Social Sciences (2015-2018). In addition to work on academic strategy and oversight of the university's three faculties, she had special responsibilities as DVC for the university's values-led work on social and environmental justice, academic freedom and equality, diversity and inclusion.

Before joining Newcastle, she had held leadership positions at the University of Nottingham including a term as Head of the School of English (2010-2013) and then as Vice-Provost for Teaching and Learning at the University of Nottingham Ningbo Campus in China (2013-2015) where she also helped set up and launch the Arts and Humanities Research Council's first research centre in China on Digital Copyright. She started her academic career at Keele University in 1995 having studied English as an undergraduate at Girton College, University of Cambridge and took an MA and a PhD in English and European Renaissance Drama at the University of Warwick.

Julie is a proud trustee of three major cultural venues - Shakespeare's Globe on London's Bankside, Shakespeare North Playhouse in Prescot, Merseyside and Northern Stage in Newcastle upon Tyne. She is a global ambassador for the Magna Charta Observatory based at the University of Bologna and serves on various steering groups for Universities UK and Research England including the UUK Sustainability and Climate Action Steering Group.

Julie's own research and education interests are in early modern drama and adaptation studies. She is currently editing Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 1 for Cambridge University Press and has articles forthcoming in collections on early modern women's writing and global literary adaptation.
