Security Services Director at SafeBreach

Derek Krein, CASP, GSTRT has extensive experience in security services and architecture. Derek is currently serving as the Security Services Director at SafeBreach since November 2021. Prior to this, Derek worked as a Client Solutions Architect at Optiv Inc from June 2020 to November 2021.

From July 2019 to May 2020, Derek held the position of Sr Security Architect at Clearent, where they developed a three-year security vision and designed the Breach and Attack Simulation (BAS) architecture. Derek integrated existing security tools into the BAS platform and optimized current solutions.

Before joining Clearent, Derek worked at Charter Communications from November 2016 to July 2019. In their role as Principal Security Engineer - Security Architecture - Advanced Engineering, they presented a next-generation security strategy at the annual security summit and initiated a collaboration between IT Security, Advanced Engineering, and IT Architecture stakeholders. Derek also served as a Security Engineer in the same company from September 2013 to November 2016. In this role, they consulted and advised project managers, designed an automated self-registration guest network, and spearheaded a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) monitoring project.

Prior to Charter Communications, Derek founded Advanced Secure Wireless and served as the Chief Technology Officer from August 2008 to January 2010. Derek developed an innovative low-cost solution for deployment of Wireless Intrusion Prevention Sensors (WIPS) and troubleshooted Cisco wireless connectivity issues.

Derek also worked at EchoStorm as the Director - Wireless Technologies and Security from October 2006 to August 2008. During this time, they participated in joint exercise trials and designed a mobile wireless prototype with long-range communication capability.

At Professional Software Engineering, Derek held multiple roles from February 2002 to October 2006, including Systems Engineer, Security Engineer, and WiFi Engineer. Derek was responsible for designing and deploying a secure wireless architecture for the Department of Defense (DoD) and executing successful third-party validations.

Derek started their career at Raytheon Technical Services Company as a Network Security Professional from January 2001 to February 2002. Derek designed a simplified architecture, built the Navy Marine Core Intranet (NMCI) Norfolk Network Operations Center (NOC), and recommended VPN connection architectures for improved performance and connectivity.

Throughout their career, Derek has demonstrated expertise in security services, architecture, and wireless technologies.

Derek Krein, CASP, GSTRT has a background in advanced electronics from their time in the US Navy. Derek also has received training in network security from Global Knowledge and SYMANTEC Security Product Training. Derek has furthered their education by obtaining certifications such as GIAC Strategic Planning, Policy, and Leadership (GSTRT) from the GIAC Certifications institution in January 2020, CASP - CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner from CompTIA in March 2018, and PCNSA from Palo Alto Networks in June 2019.
