Charles Smythe has a diverse work experience in various organizations. Charles has recently worked as an Engineering and Operations Program/Project Lead at Sandia National Laboratories since June 2022. Prior to that, they were a National Nuclear Security Administration Graduate Fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, serving as an NGFP Nonproliferation Fellow from June 2021 to June 2022.

Charles also gained experience in the field of counterproliferation as a Counterproliferation Intern at the United States Department of Defense from September 2019 to January 2021. Additionally, they have participated in fellowship programs at the Hertog Foundation, focusing on Chinese Grand Strategy, Russian Program, and the North Korean Nuclear Crisis from July-August 2018 and February 2018 respectively.

Before that, Charles served as a Program Fellow at the Institute for the Study of War in July 2017. Charles'searlier experience includes serving as a Vehicle Commander and Squad Leader in the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines (USMC) from December 2008 to December 2013.

Charles Smythe has a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science and Asian Studies from Missouri State University, which they obtained from 2014 to 2017. Charles also holds a Master of Arts degree in Security Studies (International Security) from Georgetown University, earned between 2019 and 2021.
