William Johnson has an extensive background in law enforcement, from serving as a Deputy Commander in the Crisis Negotiations Team - North METRO SWAT Team to various roles in different police departments. Currently, Johnson holds the title of Lieutenant in the Sandy Springs Police Department, overseeing the work of police sergeants, officers, and civilian supervisors.

The Sandy Springs Police Department (SSPD) was created in 2006 and serves the community with 148 sworn officers. Sandy Springs Police Department Operations are coordinated by two districts: North and South. The districts are commanded by the patrol Captain who is supported by Lieutenants. The patrol division is complemented by specialty units including Street Crimes Unit (SCU), Traffic Unit, Special Investigations Unit (SIU), and the Criminal Investigations Division (CID). The SSPD has several specialty vehicles and equipment including the river response boat, Rhino ATV units, river kayaks, and an armored vehicle for tactical response.
