Lakmal Senanayake has extensive work experience in various roles related to ICT security, facilities and electrical engineering. Lakmal Senanayake is currently serving as the Vice President at Scicom MSC Berhad, where they advise on PCI-DSS controls and ensures data security and compliance. Lakmal Senanayake is also involved with the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) as part of their IT infrastructure task force.

Lakmal has been actively involved with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) since 2013, serving as a member of the Registration and Standards Group and as an Executive Committee Member for IET New Zealand. Lakmal Senanayake has also held various roles within IET, such as a Professional Review Interviewer and an Assessor for IET Fellowship and Engineering Council UK.

Additionally, Lakmal has been associated with BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT since 2011, where they have served as a Chartered Membership Assessor for Science Council UK, Engineering Council UK, and British Computer Society. Lakmal Senanayake has also worked as a Skills Editor, Council Member, and Committee Member within BCS.

Prior to their involvement with professional organizations, Lakmal worked at National Savings Bank, holding positions such as Assistant General Manager and Chief Manager in IT. Lakmal Senanayake has also worked at NetToNet Solutions as a part-time Infrastructure/Project Manager.

Lakmal's extensive experience and involvement in professional organizations demonstrate their expertise in ICT security, infrastructure, and professional registration.

Lakmal Senanayake holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Computer, Information Sciences, and Digital Forensics from Auckland University of Technology, which they are expected to complete in 2025. Lakmal Senanayake also obtained an MPhil degree in "Evaluating Security Frameworks, Compliance Provisions in Banking System and Software" and a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree in Computer, Information Sciences, and Digital Forensics from the same university in 2020 and 2019 respectively.

In 2013, Lakmal completed a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Professional Engineering and Technology from London Metropolitan University. Prior to that, they received a Master's Degree (MCGI) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from City and Guilds of London Institute in 2007, and a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from the same institute in 2004.

Lakmal also holds several additional certifications in various fields such as data center efficiency, project management, and energy planning from Schneider Electric. Lakmal Senanayake is a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Outside of their educational achievements, Lakmal obtained a certification in conflict management in a security context from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority in 2016.
