Michael Ferrence has a long and varied career. Michael began their career in 1968 as a Public Safety Officer/Detective with the Grosse Pointe Woods Department of Public Safety. In 1976, they were appointed Chief of Police for DeWitt Charter Township. In 1978, they joined the FBI as a Special Agent, where they were assigned to several investigative programs and eventually became a Supervisory Special Agent. In 1995, they joined the FBI Academy Quantio VA as Unit Chief of the Leadership Development Institute. In 2004, they became a Senior Partner with Academy Leadership Associates, LLC. In 2005, they became Executive Director and Associate Executive Director of the Major County Sheriffs' Association. In 2010, they became Executive Director of the Leadership in Counterterrorism Alumni Association. In 2017, they became Executive Director of Strategic Partnerships for Secured Communications.

Michael Ferrence has a long and varied educational history. Michael began their studies in 1967, earning a Bachelor's degree in Police Administration from Wayne State University in 1973. Michael then pursued a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the same university, which they completed in 1976. From 1997 to 1998, they achieved a Certificate in Adult Education from the University of Virginia. Michael then earned a Master Degree in Adult Learning and Human Resource Development from Virginia Tech in 2000. Finally, they were a Doctoral Candidate (ABD) in Adult Learning and Human Resource Development at Virginia Tech from 2000 to 2004.
