Sefaria, a non-profit organization dedicated to building the future of Torah in an open and participatory way, seeks a temporary, part-time Translator and Editor Contractor for the Learning Team.

Position Overview

The Translator and Editor Contractor is a part-time, non-exempt remote US-based contractor who will deliver high-quality content translated from Hebrew/Aramaic into English that aligns with internal requirements and enables Sefaria to effectively engage a broader audience. Excellent writing, translating, and editing skills are required to ensure accuracy and completeness. The Contractor will translate a variety of Jewish texts and balance content, context, and tone. They must learn quickly, be able to adapt to various needs and expectations, and be excited about and proficient in working with AI technologies in their writing and editing. They will support translation efforts spearheaded by the Content and Learning Department, working with other team members to ensure that materials meet Sefaria’s standards and needs.

The Translator and Editor Contractor will report directly to our Chief Learning Officer.

In this position you will:

  • Create and edit translations of Jewish texts.
  • Experiment with AI to determine how best to help Sefaria provide access to the texts in our library with this technology.
  • Maintain records around successful and unsuccessful work with AI to track progress and make adjustments as needed.
  • Ensure translated content conveys original meaning and tone.
  • Proofread translated text for accuracy of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Implement a translation style guide.

Experience, qualifications, and requirements:

  • A combination of relevant work experience and education to successfully perform the responsibilities outlined in this description.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Fluent in Jewish texts, including Talmud, Rishonim, Achronim, and Chasidut.
  • Excellent writing, translating, and editing skills.
  • Ability to work with AI in translating Jewish texts.
  • Proficiency in working with online work technology, including GSuite, Slack, Zoom, and Trello (training will be provided, as needed).

Compensation and Schedule:

  • The compensation for this position is $75/hour.
  • This position is for 20 hours per week for 6 months, with the possibility to extend. A significant portion of these 20 hours must overlap with Eastern Time working hours (Monday - Friday, 9 AM - 5 PM ET).

Location:

This role may be based anywhere in the United States, but must have the ability to overlap with Eastern Time work hours.
