G. Jaishankar

Director, Student Affairs at Shiv Nadar University

Major General G Jaishankar joined Shiv Nadar University in March 2019 as Dean, Student Welfare. He is an ex-NDA officer, commissioned into the infantry in June 1981. He has commanded a brigade and a division at high altitude on very active portions of the India-China border. He has commanded two infantry battalions in Kashmir in intense operations as well.

Jai has held a number of assignments, dealing with foreign governments and agencies. Before retiring from the Indian Army, he served as the head of the Indian Army's International Co-operation Department, building rapport and carrying out inter-ministerial coordination. Prior to this, he was Commandant of the Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan from December 2015 to May 2018, including during the Doklam crisis. He has also served as the Defence Attache at the Indian Embassy in Beijing from 2008-2011. Jai is an expert on China, he can speak, read and write in the Chinese language.

He has served as director, UN Peacekeeping at Army HQ, responsible for planning, preparation, training, and deployment of around 10,000 personnel in active peacekeeping missions. He was a UN Military observer (Rwanda) in 1995-96 for stabilization operations, post-genocide in 1994, working with several UN agencies and NGOs, dealing in healthcare, refugee management and human rights.

Besides all his Army qualifications, he holds a B.Sc. degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, M.Sc. from Madras University and an M.Phil. in defence and strategic studies from University of Mumbai.
