Dr Stephen Gunther

Founder at Shoulder Innovations

Dr Stephen Gunther has a wealth of experience in the medical field. In 1998, they began as an Assistant Professor at UCSF. In 2002, they opened their own orthopedic practice, focusing on shoulder/knee/elbow injuries and orthopedic sports medicine. In 2005, they joined the Medical Advisory Board at Sonoma Orthopedic Products, Inc. In 2012, they became an Orthopedic Surgeon at Martha Jefferson Hospital. Most recently, in 2009, they founded an orthopedic medical device company called Shoulder Innovations with venture capitalist Mike DeVries (EDF Ventures), engineer Des O'Farrell (Transcorp Spine), and patent attorney Gerard VonHoffman (Knobbe Martens LLP). This company has 2 issued patents, an FDA approved glenoid implant, and a growing IP portfolio.

Dr Stephen Gunther began their educational career at Landon, followed by a BA in American Civilization from Middlebury College from 1983 to 1987. Dr Stephen then obtained a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth in 1992. In 2018, they attended Harvard University to obtain a Harvard Surgeon Scholar in Business Leadership (HMS/HBS). In 2019, they obtained a Surgeon Leadership Program certification from Harvard Medical School and is currently a Teaching Scholar at the University of California, San Francisco Medical Center through the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
