Avery Halyk

Digital Systems Coordinator at Sierra Club BC

Avery owes all of her current environmental passions to her childhood in Ontario where she was constantly out exploring nature, studying plants and insects, or pining for the next camping adventure. It wasn’t until a life pivoting family road trip to B.C. when she was 13 that she saw her first mountain. From that point on, the mountains really were always calling. Avery completed her undergrad at the University of Guelph in Wildlife Biology & Conservation and was so eager to get back out to the mountains that she skipped her graduation for a job offer in the Canadian Rockies.

Over the years Avery continued to move further and further west to Vancouver and then finally settled on Vancouver Island on Lekwungen territory. This is where she developed an affinity with the Salish Sea, Pacific Ocean, and Coastal Temperate Rainforests. Endless ocean, towering mountains and giant old forests — what more could one want?

Although Avery has worked in a few different fields over the years — including as a biologist, an auditor, a research diver, and as a development team member for a couple of environmental non-profits — her love for data and analysis has always shone through. Avery is excited to combine her passion for environmental conservation with her love for data as the Digital Systems Coordinator for Sierra Club BC. Through this work, more children can grow up with a love of nature and passion for protecting this fragile and beautiful land we live on for years to come.
