Emily Mcauliffe is currently the Senior Director of Direct Marketing at [Smile Train](/org/smile-train). Emily has previous experience working as a Senior Marketing Analyst at [WebMD](/org/webmd) from August 2013 to April 2016, and as an Analytic Consultant for Healthcare at [Thomson Reuters](/org/thomson-reuters) from January 2011 to August 2013.

Emily Mcauliffe completed their undergraduate studies at [Providence College](/org/providence-college), where they earned a B.S. in Health Policy and Management. Emily then went on to earn their MBA from [Providence College](/org/providence-college) in Non-Profit/Public/Organizational Management. After completing their MBA, Emily moved to Australia to attend [Bond University](/org/bond-university).

Their manager is Susannah Schaefer, Executive Vice Chair, President & CEO. They are on a team with Nicole Bell - VP, Public Relations, Anne Arnold - Senior Director, Education & Training, and Janet Blackwood - Senior Director, Grants Management.

Wendell Thomas has served as the Vice President of Information Systems and Technology at Smile Train since February 2022, where he leads the Information Technology department’s management of global technology operations, including information systems, cloud technologies, networking, data integrity and security, and communications systems.

Wendell comes with over 20 years of technology experience in the non-profit and for-profit sectors. Before joining Smile Train, Wendell brought his information technology and security expertise as Vice President, Information Technology to Safe Horizon, the largest US victim services non-profit organization serving over 250,000 people annually.

Wendell holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, a Master of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance from Western Governors University.

Juan Pablo França De La Plata is the current Director of Marketing & Communications for [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in the Americas. In this role, they are responsible for the maintenance, growth, and improvement of [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)'s marketing and communications presence in the region. Juan provides oversight and direction for implementing effective and efficient strategies in line with regional needs and global objectives and guidelines in order to achieve [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)'s mission.

Previously, Juan Pablo worked as the Encontro de Turismo where they were responsible for developing strategies and working with the regional team to grow the organization's brand and raise awareness for [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) programs. Juan also served as the regional marketing and communications representative, point of contact, and spokesperson for [Smile Train](/org/smile-train). In this role, they proactively responded to needs and worked closely with [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) regional and global teams so as to keep communication channels open, projects integrated, and the regional team moving together.

Juan Pablo has a long history of working in marketing and communications roles where they have been able to utilize their skills to help grow organizations and reach their goals. Juan is a dedicated professional who is passionate about making a difference in the world and they will continue to use their skills and experience to help [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) achieve its mission.

Nkeiruka Obi is the current VP & Regional Director, Africa at [Smile Train](/org/smile-train). Nkeiruka has over 20 years of experience in the financial sector. Prior to joining [Smile Train](/org/smile-train), they worked as a treasury at Diamond Bank plc from January 2002 to January 2007. Nkeiruka also worked as a credit and marketing officer at Allstates Trust Bank from January 1997 to January 2003. In their current role, they are responsible for leading [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)'s Africa programs and initiatives.

Nicole Bell is currently the VP of Public Relations at [Smile Train](/org/smile-train). Nicole previously worked as the Director of Public Relations at Operation Smile from January 2016 to September 2020. During their time at Operation Smile, Nicole developed, wrote, and presented stories to media outlets which resulted in large market, national, and international coverage. Nicole also doubled the media coverage from 2018-2019. In addition, Nicole executed communications and public relations strategies which supported increased brand awareness and led to new corporate partnerships with companies such as PepsicCo Frito-Lay. Nicole also served as a spokesperson on various high-profile platforms, wrote social media posts for celebrities, and spearheaded an international campaign which resulted in hundreds of student volunteers supporting frontline professionals amid COVID-19.

Beatriz joined [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in 2011. In her role as Vice President, Finance, she oversees all fiscal and fiduciary responsibilities for [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) Inc. and its international affiliates.  Beatriz works closely with the Fundraising and Grant Management departments to maximize the efficiency of the funds raised by [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) and help as many children with clefts as possible.  

Beatriz comes to [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) after twelve years as an auditor in a regional public accounting firm where she performed and supervised audits, reviews, and compilations for a wide variety of industries including broker dealers, retailers, and professional service firms. Beatriz has specialized in performing audits of non-profit organizations since the beginning of her accounting career. Being on both sides of the accounting ledger has given her extensive knowledge about the operations of non-profit organizations. Her prior professional experience also includes social work, which has contributed to her desire to help those in need.
 
Beatriz serves on the Board of Directors of Memorial Day Nursery, Paterson, NJ.  She graduated Cum Laude receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from [Rutgers University](/org/rutgers-university).  Beatriz earned her CPA designation in the States of New York and New Jersey.

Beatriz Gonzalez

Troy joined [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in 2001 and currently serves as Senior Vice President, Global Fundraising and Relations. He oversees the organization’s community fundraising efforts, Corporate giving, PR and social media and supports the international fundraising entities. He is focused on ensuring [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) fulfills their vision of enabling safe surgery and comprehensive care to the global cleft lip and palate community.

Troy started his career at [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in a junior capacity, and subsequently worked his way up to serve as both a Development Associate and Database Manager. In those roles, he oversaw [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s donor database as it expanded from a few thousand records to millions of records. He has also been responsible for the expansion of [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s fundraising efforts into new international markets.

In 2006, Troy embarked on his first visit to Nigeria to meet with local [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) partner surgeons and patients. Since then, he has traveled all over the US supporting community fundraising events, and has also visited [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s local partners and programs in Kenya, Ethiopia, Cambodia, India, Haiti, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, Colombia, the Philippines and Brazil.

Prior to joining [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s team in 2001, Troy worked for a San Francisco based entertainment company and was involved with a philanthropic family foundation. Troy holds a BA in Advertising and Public Relations from [Youngstown State University](/org/youngstown-state-university) in Ohio.

Rich joined [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in December 2013 and is the Senior Director, Development. He and his team work closely with individuals and family foundations in the US., Europe, and Latin America to assist donors in realizing their philanthropic goals.

Before joining [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s team, Rich was a Major Gifts Officer with Amnesty International USA, with responsibilities for New England and Washington D.C. Prior to joining the nonprofit world, Rich spent his career in telecommunications and media, with positions in sales, marketing, and management. The firms where he worked include [AT&T](/org/att), The New York Times International, [The Wall Street Journal](/org/the-wall-street-journal), Bloomberg BusinessWeek, and NYSE Euronext.

Rich, who holds both a BS from [Manhattan College](/org/manhattan-college) and an MA from [Fordham University](/org/fordham-university), has seen [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s partners create new smiles for patients in Argentina, Brazil and China.

Susannah Schaefer is Executive Vice Chair, President & Chief Executive Officer of [Smile Train](/org/smile-train), an international organization focused on empowering local medical professionals to provide free cleft lip and/or palate surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children globally.

Susannah joined [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in February 2013, after serving as a member of the organization’s Board for over ten years.  In her role as CEO, she leads [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s vision to expand access to healthcare and increase local capacity in countries in which [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) helps children. During her time as CEO, Susannah led an organizational rebrand, seeded funding for hundreds of thousands of new smiles, expanded cleft surgical training and education programs throughout the world and helped to establish organizational partnerships in Haiti and Rwanda. In addition, Susannah led the team in developing [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s ground-breaking Virtual Surgery Simulator, further accelerating cleft surgical training and enhancing the organization’s “teach a man to fish” model.

Susannah came to [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) after almost twenty years in operational roles, bringing a vast network and past experiences to the team. Previously, Susannah served as Vice President, Director of International Marketing at CA Technologies, where she led implementation of the company’s international marketing strategies. Earlier in her career, Susannah was the Director of Marketing, Asia for CA Technologies, where she built the organization’s presence throughout the region and hosted the first regional CA World conference in China.

Susannah is a Trustee of The [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) UK and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from the State University of New York College at Oswego.

Justin joined [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in 2014. He leads a national team to engage individual donors, foundations, corporations and community partners to raise money and awareness for [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) across the United States. In this capacity he collaborates with domestic and international colleagues to align [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) programmatic needs with donor philanthropy to fund the vision and growth of [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) to support cleft lip and palate surgeries and comprehensive cleft care globally.  

Prior to this role at [Smile Train](/org/smile-train), Justin led business development functions for marketing service organizations and creative agencies winning business from brands like SONY Electronics, Merck Consumer Care, Kraft, [Aflac](/org/aflac), Anheuser-Busch, [Avery Dennison](/org/avery-dennison), Black & Decker and others across multiple industry sectors. His professional sales, marketing and public relations skills have been honed over more than 25 years with early career roles in agency account service growing into business development leadership functions with organizations in Boston, Los Angeles and Tokyo.  

Justin has witnessed firsthand the amazing skill of [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) partners in India and Mexico and is excited to compete in his first [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) athletic event as a member of Team Empower. A graduate of [Boston College](/org/boston-college), Justin works for [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) from an office in Long Beach, CA.

Mamta is [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s Vice President & Regional Director, Asia.

Mamta joined [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in 2006 managing the largest program area in India. Currently she manages South Asia, Southeast Asia and MENA, comprising 19 countries. These are intricate, dissimilar and complex geographies with diverse socio-economic and cultural dynamics. Mamta has led  [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s Asia team in extending both reach and impact besides creating sustainable programs, strategic partnerships and a deeper, broader integration of [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s engagements with multiple stakeholders.

Mamta was educated in India at Isabella Thoburn College and the National Institute of Information Technology (NIIT). Mamta has also been trained in Reputation Management and Media Training with the Stern School of Business and Shandwick Inc.

Erin joined [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in 2013 and serves as Senior Vice President, Programs. She has more than ten years of experience working with cleft lip and palate surgical programs around the world and oversees [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s programmatic strategy and innovative initiatives in education, training, research and comprehensive care.

Prior to joining [Smile Train](/org/smile-train), Erin was the Associate Vice President of Program Development at [Operation Smile](/org/operation-smile). She also spent time in the private sector as an attorney in the London offices of Allen & Overy, LLP. Erin’s work at [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) focuses on strengthening treatment programs and access to care for children with clefts and overseeing innovative programming to build the capacity of health professionals in 90+ countries to offer safe, high-quality surgical treatment and related comprehensive cleft care.

She holds a JD from the University of Virginia School of Law and a BA from [Arcadia University](/org/arcadia-university). Erin also serves on the Board of the CORE Group, an organization dedicated to improving health practices for vulnerable populations.

Erin Stieber

Priya joined [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in 2011 and serves as Senior Director, Medical Programs. She has more than eight years of experience working with [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s Medical Advisory Board to expand, leverage, and promote [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s global programmatic work by empowering local cleft care providers with support, guidance, and oversight to ensure safe, high quality, sustainable cleft programs. 

Prior to joining [Smile Train](/org/smile-train), Priya was a Project Manager at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and Brigham & Women’s Center for Surgery and Public Health. During this time, she was involved in the [World Health Organization](/org/world-health-organization)’s patient safety initiative ‘Safe Surgery Saves Lives.’ Following her time at HSPH, Priya worked for the NYC Department of Mental Health & Hygiene’s Primary Care Information Project as a Program Manager for the Primary Care Information Project. Priya’s work at [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) focuses on identifying challenges and gaps in safety and/or effective treatment and strategically implementing solutions to promote the safety and quality and cultivate and scale for measurable increased impact in [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) treatment programs worldwide.

Priya holds a Master’s of Public Health from the Boston University School of Public Health and a BA from [Smith College](/org/smith-college).

Priya Desai

Adina joined [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in 2008 and is currently overseeing the organization’s efforts to empower community groups and individuals throughout the U.S. to raise both funds and awareness for [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s programs. With a focus on engaging youth and millennial supporters, Adina’s team has founded [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s Young Leadership Circle, the High School Student Ambassador program and the Smile Impact Society for University students. In addition to working with Team EMPOWER, [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s athletic fundraising program and the Cleft Community Advisory Council (CCAC), Adina oversees the Journey of Smiles program which gives supporters the opportunity to visit our programs in the field to see the impact of their support firsthand. 

Adina graduated from the joint program between [Columbia University](/org/columbia-university) and the Jewish Theological Seminary and holds Bachelor’s degrees in American History and Jewish Women’s Studies. She received her MS in Nonprofit Management from Milano, The New School for Management and Urban Policy.

Adina Lescher

Shannon joined [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) in 2013 and currently serves as the Vice President & Regional Director, Americas & Europe, overseeing the organization’s work in Latin America, as well as programs in Europe and the US. Shannon previously served as the Director of Program Development for [Smile Train](/org/smile-train), creating and implementing valuable cleft resources and programs for field staff, patients, and treatment partners around the world. Driven by her passion for the cause, she has devoted the last decade of her career in the nonprofit sector to executing programs that support patients and families affected by cleft.

Prior to joining [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) Shannon was the Associate Vice President of International Programs for [Operation Smile](/org/operation-smile), providing operational oversight for hundreds of volunteer medical programs, including disaster relief initiatives, as well as strategic direction for fundraising, research, and awareness and partnership building projects. Shannon also spent time living in France and Senegal working with international students and furthering her studies. She holds a Bachelor’s in French Language & Literature and Anthropology from the [University of Virginia](/org/university-of-virginia), a Master’s in Foreign Languages from [George Mason University](/org/george-mason-university), and an Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership from [Duke University](/org/duke-university).

Rachel Kimber joined [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) as the Vice President, Grants Management in March 2022. For more than 15 years, Rachel has led and contributed to the nonprofit sector through her commitment to grantmaking that is human-centered, data-informed, and technology-supported, all to advance the implementation of emergent grantmaking practices around equity and technological innovations.

Before joining [Smile Train](/org/smile-train), Rachel served as Grants Manager at the [Arcus Foundation](/org/arcus-foundation), overseeing an international portfolio of LGBTQ rights and ape conservation grantees spanning from Indonesia to Mexico. Responsibilities included ensuring regulatory compliance, advising on complex grantmaking environments, and developing operational and technical projects to advance [Arcus](/org/arcus)’ mission and values.  At the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation, which supports the arts and humanities, she administered financials, compliance, and regulatory procedures in the grantmaking process. Rachel also supervised the archiving of the family’s foundation history and standardized grants data.

At [Smile Train](/org/smile-train), Rachel is setting the strategic direction of the department, with a focus on improving collaboration across the organization, designing and implementing efficient and effective processes and practices, providing governance for the organization’s grants management system and related data, and developing structures to support the successful execution of these initiatives.

Rachel actively engages with the sector on emerging trends. She serves on the New York Regional PEAK Grantmaking Communications Committee and was chair for the New York Chapter from 2017 to 2018. She is also a member of the Technology Association of Grantmakers (TAG), where she serves on the Knowledge Management Committee, and was a TAG Emerging Leaders Mentor. Rachel is also involved with Philanthropy New York.

She earned a bachelor’s of arts in cognitive science at [Northwestern University](/org/northwestern-university) in 2003 and completed her post-graduate studies from the School of Public Affairs at [Baruch College](/org/baruch) and [Concordia College](/org/concordia-college), earning a dual master’s degree in public administration and business leadership in 2014.

Rachel currently lives in Peekskill, New York on the Hudson River, where she and her partner raise two young children, making sure to prioritize time to unwind from the hectic flow of daily life.

Rachel Kimber

Ashley joined Smile Train in 2017 and serves as Smile Train’s first-ever In House Counsel. She currently   oversees the legal affairs of the organization, including compliance with all applicable laws and regulations and implementation of risk-management processes. She also provides legal counsel and strategic advice on a wide range of matters, including contracts and transactions, data privacy, intellectual property, employment and human resources, general corporate and governance concerns, and litigation.

Prior to joining Smile Train, Ashley practiced at the law firm of Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler advising organizations on complex litigations, investigations, and intellectual property disputes. While at the firm, she was recognized for her pro bono practice and acted as Secretary of the Pro Bono Committee for the New York County Lawyers Association. Before joining Patterson Belknap, she worked as a law clerk for the Honorable Joel A. Pisano on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey and for the Honorable Michael A. Chagares on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.

She holds a JD from Seton Hall Law School and BA in Finance and Economics from Georgetown University. 

Ashley Ochs

 Vivian joined Smile Train's family in October 2021 as the inaugural Vice President of Human Resources. With 20+ years of experience in not-for-profit HR, Vivian leads Smile Train’s employee experience, talent acquisition, HR strategic planning, benefits, and training and development initiatives. Before joining Smile Train, Vivian served in HR leadership roles as Senior Director of HR for the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and as the VP of HR for Acacia Systems, where she oversaw the departments directing HR functions for both large and small, national and international employee populations. Vivian has spearheaded several organizational change initiatives and has experience developing and creating HR departments. She sits on several cohorts for diversity and inclusion and organizational leadership. Vivian holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts and Business Administration from The College of New Rochelle and certifications in HR, Mediation, and Employee Investigation.

Dr. Esther Joined Smile Train in 2008 as a volunteer and now serves as the Senior Vice President, Global Medical Programs.  

In this capacity, Dr. Esther leads the strategic direction of Smile Train’s medical programs around the globe and oversees the implementation of Smile Train’s Education and Training and Safety and Quality programs.    

Prior to this, Esther served as the Vice President and Regional Director for Africa. During her tenure, the programs have grown scale, spanning 38 countries with 254+ partner hospitals and reaching over 116,000patients, increasing access while improving safety and quality.  

Before joining Smile Train, Dr. Esther worked with the Ministry of Medical Services in Kenya and later Kenya Airways as a Medical Officer. She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) from University of Nairobi and a Master in Public Health specializing in Health Systems Management. She is also a qualified accountant under the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and holds several other certificate-based trainings.  

She was awarded Business Daily’s Top40Under40 women in 2016, in recognition of her efforts and achievements in providing cleft care in Africa. She serves on the board of her Rotary Club, she is a wife and mother of three. Dr. Esther is passionate about children and their health, an important pillar in her commitment to Smile Train.  

Esther Njoroge-Muriithi

Kimmy joined Smile Train in 2010 managing programs in the Philippines.  As Vice President of Southeast Asia, she currently oversees Smile Train affiliate entities in the Philippines and Indonesia and programs across the region. Kimmy led the expansion of comprehensive cleft care programs through strategic partnerships and received several local and regional awards for spearheading the country’s Speech Telehealth programs launched during the COVID-19 pandemic.  She also led the development of the first-ever Filipino Speech Language App designed for those born with a cleft.  Aside from programs, Kimmy also manages fundraising and governance functions in the Philippines and Indonesia.     

Kimmy graduated with a bachelor's degree in Social Sciences from the Ateneo de Manila University and completed the course requirements of the Master of Public Management at the University of the Philippines-Open University. Prior to joining Smile Train, she held regional leadership roles in corporate and government affairs in Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer, Inc.  In her corporate role, she was part of many multi-awarded public relations campaigns recognized by local and international organizations.  She continues to be an active member of the Public Relations Society of the Philippines.

She currently manages the Database and Web Development teams, working closely with marketing, content, fundraising, development and other internal departments. Lori’s focus is on evolving and optimizing the organization’s efforts to drive continuous innovation of its technology stack to support exponential business growth and allow [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) to create a bigger impact globally.

Lori leverages prior experience in various B2B and B2C digital marketing roles in developing strategic demand generation campaigns, defining metrics and reporting dashboards, optimizing systems for operational efficiencies, and driving tactical business objectives. She specializes in a multitude of digital marketing technology platforms, user experiences, and managing and optimizing data.

Lori holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from [Marist College](/org/marist-college) with a minor in Art. Her prior professional experience also includes email marketing, social media marketing, and event marketing.

She oversees a team responsible for high quality grantmaking operations and integration across departments, as well as [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s global programs information system for partners and staff.

Janet served for six years in progressively advancing roles in  [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s Programs department, managing all aspects of [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) global cleft programs with medical partners, international staff, and medical advisory boards.  She then spearheaded a separate Grants Management department to streamline grantmaking, and led the launch of [Smile Train](/org/smile-train)’s first grants management system, enabling the organization to successfully manage the growth of global programs.  She is motivated every day to provide [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) staff and partners with effective tools to work together more efficiently, saving valuable time and resources better devoted to the children [Smile Train](/org/smile-train) serves, and to increase access to key information for best decision making that is data driven and outcomes focused.

Janet received a BA in neurobiology from [Cornell University](/org/cornell-university), and her experience also includes working with Save the Children in Nepal to support locally driven women’s empowerment programs,  as an editor for the Overseas Development Network,  a national student organization promoting awareness of international development issues,  as an associate editor for Internet news provider ClariNet Communications,  as an inner city Youth and Elder Program Coordinator as a VISTA volunteer in San Francisco,  and as a children’s ski instructor in Squaw Valley, California.
