Smita Rakesh has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of clean energy, sustainability, and climate action. Smita is currently serving as the Vice President at Social Alpha, leading their Climate and Sustainability portfolio. Smita'srole involves managing innovation curation and venture development for disruptive technology solutions in areas such as clean energy transition, waste management, circular economy, mobility, urban transition, and industrial decarbonization.
Prior to their current role, Smita held the position of Portfolio Director - Clean Energy & Climate Action at Social Alpha. Smita organized international grand challenges in clean energy and played a key role in establishing the Clean Energy International Incubation Centre (CEIIC) in Delhi. Smita'sefforts demonstrated India's global leadership in clean energy innovation.
Smita also served as a Board Member at Sustain Plus Energy Foundation, which focuses on sustainable energy access and poverty alleviation initiatives. Smita contributed to the foundation's efforts in delivering decentralized renewable energy solutions more sustainably and with greater impact.
In the past, Smita worked as an Independent Consultant at Tata Trusts, where they designed and implemented the Clean Cooking Program in four states in India. Smita also held leadership positions at Ashden India Renewable Energy Collective, Sir Ratan Tata Trust, and The Energy and Resources Institute.
Smita has a strong background in research and project management, having worked as a Research Associate and Consultant in various organizations such as The Energy and Resources Institute, Sambodhi Research and Communications Pvt. Ltd., and Tata Institute of Social Sciences.
Smita'sexpertise and contributions to the field of clean energy and sustainability have earned their recognition, with their being selected as a Yale World Fellow for the year 2023.
Smita Rakesh completed their B.A. (Hons.) in Geography at Miranda House College from 2003 to 2006. Smita then pursued their M.Sc. in Environmental Studies at TERI University from 2006 to 2008.
