Karla Mendes is a prominent journalist with extensive experience in environmental reporting, investigative journalism, and business reporting. Currently serving as the Second Vice President and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Chair of the Society of Environmental Journalists and a member of its Board of Directors since September 2023, Mendes has been a Brazil Features Writer and Investigative Reporter for Mongabay since July 2019. Previously, Mendes held significant roles at the Thomson Reuters Foundation as a land and property rights correspondent and at S&P Global Market Intelligence as a correspondent in Latin America. Mendes also contributed as a columnist for plus55 and reported for media outlets such as O Globo and O Estado de S. Paulo, focusing on business and infrastructure topics. Educational qualifications include a Master's degree in Investigative Reporting from The University of King's College, an MBA from Fundação Instituto de Administração, and a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais.
