Derek Rowland has a diverse work experience in communications and government relations. Derek is currently the Director of Communications & Government Relations at Southlake Regional Health Centre since May 2022. Prior to this, Derek has held various roles within the Ontario government, including Deputy Chief Of Staff and Director Of Communications in the Office of the Hon. Lisa MacLeod at the Ontario Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries. Derek also served as Senior Manager, Issues and Legislative Affairs, and Press Secretary in the Office of the Hon. Lisa MacLeod at the Ontario Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. Before their government roles, Derek worked as the Communications Manager at Scarborough and Rouge Hospital Foundation, and as a Communications Officer at Scarborough and Rouge Hospital. Derek began their career as a Communications Associate at Johnson & Johnson, where they achieved significant success in fundraising for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
Derek Rowland has a Professional Certificate in Strategic Public Relations from the University of Toronto, obtained in 2015. Derek also holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science & Religious Studies from McMaster University, earned from 2009 to 2014. Derek participated in a Study Abroad Program at the University of Bristol from 2011 to 2012, focusing on Politics & Theology. In addition to their degrees, Derek has obtained certifications as a Certified Market Access Professional from the Canadian Association for Healthcare Reimbursement in 2017 and as a Hootsuite Certified Professional from Hootsuite Media Inc. in 2015.
